A short film born from our shared devotion to the body, ritual and the wisdom of women, this film explores the tenderness of living in a changing body within a culture that asks us to remain forever young.

Over four days, we gathered in circle with women of different ages, ancestries, shapes and stories. Through embodied practices and ceremony, we laid on the altar what we’d learned to reject in the privacy of a mirror and practised inhabiting our bodies as sacred ground.

There is money to be made every time a woman learns to recoil at another part of herself. From cosmetics to plastic surgery, entire industries profit when we measure our worth based on how desirable we are. If we’re willing to tell the whole truth, we have to reckon with the ways we’ve helped keep that culture alive.

What have we participated in? Where have we become custodians of the very beliefs that seek to keep us in cycles of perpetual self-hatred? Which features have we learned to reject, when they’re the ones our grandmothers or great grandmothers passed down to us?

In circle, we laid our grief on the earth. We mourned the years spent searching our bodies for flaws and all the pleasure we denied ourselves of because we didn’t feel beautiful enough to enjoy our bodies as they are. Then we danced. We celebrated our bodies in the forms they already take, the flesh that carries us from our first breath to our last. In a culture that profits from our self-rejection, that celebration is a sacred rebellion.

May this video reach those who need to remember. May we we all come home to the body as altar and remember what has always been ours:
