Milestone reached 👨‍🎓

I’ve officially graduated university,
Summa Cum Laude with Honors,
and I even got selected to give a speech as the Student Speaker in front of our packed arena.

This one wasn’t easy. If you know me, you know how bad I wanted this. I mean, it’s a piece of paper. But it’s what it stands for, and what we went through to get this piece of paper - the entire journey along the way, the ups and downs.

Many moments, we could’ve given up. But we didn’t, and now… we keep moving up!

Again, proud to say we did it ❤️

Wow, 1 year sober ✨ here’s a glimpse into my story.

I drank to numb my thoughts, & was fooled into thinking it was the solution to any battle. I stopped wanting to suffocate due to my thoughts, & chose to suffocate with the bottle instead. Eventually my mind lied to me that I needed the bottle for anything, positive or negative. And I believed that lie.

I’m stubborn, I thought 1) no WAY I have an actual problem, & 2) I can certainly beat this battle on my own. Wrestling taught me that if I wanted to defeat something, I work harder & harder until I can overcome my opponent. Why then, no matter how bad I wanted to stop, I just couldn’t? I wouldn’t just end up back at my bottom, but the bottom got deeper & deeper. It was like sinking in quicksand. 🕳️

Frustrated I couldn’t win the battle, I just dove all-in into the bottle. Endless cycle of guilt & shame. Addicted to running. Addicted to hiding. I couldn’t be helped. I was hopeless & thought I’d never be saved.

Eventually I found out I don’t just have a problem with alcohol, but in dealing with life. Everything was unfair & the world was rigged against me. My ego shrouded over my entire judgement of life, & my self-pity was full. My perception to others was all that mattered. Anything to boost my perception, I jumped fully into.

By some miracle, for just a split second, I dropped caring about what others would think. I entered treatment and began a battle to test the roots of my downfall. It saved my life. 💟

My purpose is to spread hope, to disperse resilience, & to ignite a reason to stay. This demon is no joke, but you don’t have to keep living haunted.

Put down your sword ⚔️ There is something tragically heroic about fighting a battle we are destined to lose. It’s not about winning tho; you just don’t have to fight anymore. A fresh breath of air awaits. The battle is over; serenity is just around the corner. 🍃

My pain will be worth it if one day I can save even just one life. I’m grateful that my higher power has given me a second chance to live a worth-while life. 🩵
