“For me it is important to understand a material together with its connotations and historical context. Aluminium feels like a young material. It carries little cultural weight, and it speaks of renewal and of ongoing transformation.”

Additional note: In the nineteenth century aluminium was so difficult to extract that it was displayed in royal courts like a jewel. Napoleon III reserved aluminium cutlery for his most honoured guests.

“I am creating these works in wax, but I am immortalising them. Through a process of coating them with graphite, they become fossils, almost prehistoric, transformed into something permanent.”

Additional Note: Graphite is the most stable form of carbon found in nature. In geology, organic matter becomes fossilised through similar carbonisation processes over immense periods of time. By coating wax with graphite, this transformation is condensed, echoing the natural passage from the ephemeral to the permanent.

“Play is extremely important to me. This idea of removing seriousness from an action allows the work to emerge naturally through the hands and the textures. When you touch something, you carry a tactile memory.”

Additional Note: The sense of touch activates a form of sensory memory known as haptic or tactile memory, through which the body recalls the shape, texture, and temperature of what it has experienced. This physical remembrance bridges movement, perception, and emotion, allowing the hands to think before the mind does.
