Some sad news. The amazing Helen Hays of the Great Gull Island Project passed away peacefully today at 94 years of age. Here is a short obituary that we prepared for the museum.

Helen Hays, a member of the Ornithology Department since 1956, and Director of the Great Gull Island Project, passed away this morning in Westchester, New York. Born on 22 January 1931 in Johnstown, New York, she graduated from Wellesley College and subsequently pursued graduate studies at Cornell where she studied the Ruddy Duck.
In the 1940s, Great Gull Island, the site of a former fort in Long Island Sound, was given to the AMNH for a dollar by the U.S. government after it no longer was needed by the military. In the late 1960s, with the support of the museum and the Linnaean Society of New York, Helen began to work with a group of volunteers on the island, to monitor and protect the nesting colonies of Common Terns and endangered Roseate Terns. This became known as the Great Gull Island Project which Helen directed for over 50 years.
Throughout the years, Helen raised funds for the Project’s support and began living on the island from April to September since 1969. The island’s population of Roseate Terns eventually grew to become the largest breeding colony in the Western Hemisphere. She trained dozens of young scientists in fieldwork through her internship program on the island, many of whom went on to become professional scientists.
President Ronald Reagan awarded the Great Gull Island Project The President’s Volunteer Action Award Citation in 1985. For her work on the island, Helen was also awarded a Conservation Service Award from the US Department of the Interior in 2002, an honorary doctorate by the University of Connecticut in 2015, an Environmental Champion Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2016 as well as a lifetime Achievement Award from Wellesley College. A documentary film about Helen and the island, Full Circle, was completed in 2021 and won several awards.
Helen will be greatly missed by her friends and colleagues in the Ornithology Department and throughout the museum. by @pablodulce

Ben Frank King: 9 September 1937 – 11 May 2024

This morning I received the sad news that Ben King died.

Ben was a hugely important figure in Asian ornithology, he wrote the first field guide to the birds of Southeast Asia and was a pioneer of birding travel with his Kingbirds Tours company. He also published many scientific papers on bird distribution and taxonomy. A full account of his achievements can be found on http://www.kingbirdtours.com/vitae.html

It’s been a while since I got back from an amazing trip to Ecuador. We spent a week at the Bigal River Biological Reserve located in one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. With a @team_ebird list of over 500 species I highly recommend it to birders on a budget. Aside from the incredible bird list the site has a rich mammal fauna, we had fresh Jaguar tracks around camp every morning. DM me if you are interested in visiting. I don’t do bird photography but will post some habitat shots in my story. taken in Bigal River Biological Reserve by @pablodulce

Purple Sandpipers breed in the high Arctic and spend their winters on the rocky coasts of the eastern seaboard. The jetties at Coney Island Brooklyn hosted quite a few today.
