2026 HECHO EN Vendor
@pabloserranoart

Pablo Serrano is an artist based in the Pilsen community in Chicago.

Born in Chicago to Mexican immigrants who came from Durango Mexico in 1979, his work has focused on using the creative potential of art to explore different aspects of citizenship, education, and politics. Constantly seeking to engage different members of the broader community about important questions and concerns through his art classes, music and art shows, he believes that every creative means possible should be used to find and make meaning in this complicated world.

All his life he’s engaged in social art experiences as an artist, teacher and music event organizer. He studied Graphic Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign then became a High School art teacher at Farragut Career Academy. He got his Master of Arts in Teaching from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and pursued a PhD in Art Education from Northern Illinois University. Mid PhD program he left to establish The People’s Stage Karaoke and co-found Kombi Chicago which provides meaningful musical experiences to the Latino community of Chicago.

Throughout it all, his interest in facilitating meaningful social experiences that deepen both a sense of self and a sense community among strangers, has been his focus. He believes that every experience has the potential to reveal something about ourselves and our world and is eager to collaborate with everyone who shares this belief.

He is happily married and raising three beautiful children here in the Pilsen Community of Chicago.

God of War. 2024 Acrylic on Canvas 15 ft tall by 10ft wide.

Reflection on the heavy weight the gang culture forces upon many of the youth who have to navigate life on our streets. The mask is a reference to a persona of warrior/soldier that is assumed that hides the other dimensions of humanity behind the stereotype. The multicolored hoodie references the rich and deep cultural legacy at our fingertips within our reach but kept away by the lack of self-knowledge and education. The child on his shoulders is a reference to the youngest generations that live and grow up in this world, preserving their sense of innocence against tremendous odds. She is also a reference to the weight people carry despite feeling trapped in the vicious cycles of violence as they return home and try to be big brothers, cousins, and family to the kids at home. The mask with its red markings is my attempt to reference Huitzlipochtli the Aztec god of war/ sun who was one of two of the most important gods in their cosmology. The other is Tlaloc, god of rain and fertility who were worshipped equally, at least at templo Mayor the main pyramid of the Aztecs. Today we have too many people trapped in the role of warriors who do not have enough space in life to build and enjoy peace. With decades of this now happening not just here in Chicago but with cartel violence we see that the scale of the challenge is monumental and multigenerational. This gangsterization of our culture is by no means exclusive to traditional gangs but can be tragically seen in our politics exemplified perfectly by the scorched earth politics of Donald Trump and the dehumanization of any and all political adversaries, Muslims, and the undocumented community in particular. taken in Prospectus Art Gallery by @pabloserranoart

The heart of this country is freezing with the staggering ignorance, corruption and hate towards our immigrant communities. We need to come together and overcome the people who not only are leading our country but the entire world we deeply affect on a road to perdition. The past, time and time again has shown us there is no other way.

Fuerza hermanxs. Y que viva nuestra libertad Mexicana en tiempos difíciles. taken in Mexico by @pabloserranoart

I will never understand how THIS became acceptable in any neighborhood of the “land of the free and home of the brave”. Yet our immigrant communities have to endure it because of the dehumanization in the dehumanizing political narrative against immigrants, and the billions of profits that go into making our people criminals.
