Last month, our Head of Business Development, Natasha, spent time aboard Pacific Yellowfin off the coast of British Columbia, and sat down to share some of the vessel’s history.⁠
⁠
Over the years, Cookson Adventures has run some of the most ambitious trips aboard her, tracking whale activity with echolocaters and spending time with First Nations spirit bear keepers, searching for this unique, all-white creature.⁠
⁠
And, built during the Second World War, Pacific Yellowfin has lived several lives long before reaching these waters: wartime service defending Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, a stint as a government research vessel studying tuna and sardines, and a rumoured chapter running arms during Cold War conflicts in Central America. ⁠
⁠
It’s this kind of vessel, one with real history and a captain who knows the coastline better than anyone, that opens up true explorer-style travel: private access to remote inlets, spirit bear territory and salmon runs few itineraries ever reach.⁠

A particular kind of quiet settles over a riverbank when you’re hoping to see a Spirit Bear.

Seeing one requires patience and the permission and guidance of the Gitga’at First Nation, who have stewarded these lands and waters for thousands of years.

If you’re fortunate, the ghost in the green appears.
