I walked my favorite shaped watch today, like a pet 🤗 it’s the Patek Philippe Triangular ref. 3412, designed by Gilbert Albert in the 1950s. What a legend. A decade before the Cartier Crash London!

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival

The best moon-phase watch from Rolex: the ref. 6062, from early 1950s, with star indexes. It simply cannot be compared with the new one that Rolex just released 😂 which is toooo ugly.

Three very different watches, the same problem to solve: the mainspring.

A mechanical watch has an inherent problem. A fully wound mainspring delivers more torque, but as it unwinds, that torque gradually falls. Ideally, the balance should receive as consistent a supply of energy as possible.

For centuries, watchmakers have obsessed over different ways to solve this.

Lange uses a fusée-and-chain to compensate for the changing torque through leverage. F.P. Journe uses a remontoire d’égalité to regulate the energy before it reaches the escapement. Oscillon goes even further upstream, rethinking the mainspring itself with its constant-torque Tensator system.

今天我们看的这几块表，看起来属于不同年代、不同品牌，造型和审美也没什么关系。但往机芯里看，就会发现，它们都在尝试解同一道题：发条。

机械表有一个与生俱来的问题。你给发条刚上足链的时候比较有劲，随着一天下来的使用，动力慢慢被释放，输出扭矩会下降。那传到摆轮，就可能影响振幅，再影响走时的稳定。

但在理想的世界里，摆轮每次得到的能量，应该尽量一致。不是越有劲越好，而是不要刚开始有劲，后面越来越没劲。

听起来是个简单要求，但数百年来有无数制表师们绞尽脑汁去跟这个”先天性问题”较劲。

Together with Sam Hines @watches79 , we take a closer look at @alangesoehne Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite,” two extraordinary mother-of-pearl @fpjourneofficial tourbillons, and a fascinating creation from @oscillon_watch .

Different eras, different aesthetics, completely different approaches to watchmaking. But turn them over, and the conversation somehow comes back to the mainspring.

@cartier stole the show at @sothebyswatches spring auctions this year, and the upcoming autumn sales have plenty more to get excited about.

Having explored the Cheich in my previous video, let’s turn to some of the other exceptional vintage Cartiers coming to auction, including three of Cartier London’s most celebrated designs: the Pebble, the Baignoire Allongée and the Octagonal.

My Pateks are dancing!

Gilbert Albert was on another level. I love just about everything he designed for Patek Philippe in the 1950s and 60s.

Collecting his Asymmetric series takes some patience though. Finding even one is difficult enough. Trying to find a collection of them? Ugh. Good luck? 🍀😂

My favorite is the ref. 3422. Christie’s has previously cited just five yellow gold examples known to the market. Rarity is nice, but it’s the shape that gets me.

Even sitting perfectly still, it looks as though it’s dancing.

I was lucky enough to find this one with a different case finishing. Beyond the texture, the case shape also differs slightly from the 3422 I already own.

Having the two side by side makes those little differences all the more enjoyable.

我的百达翡丽，好像会跳舞

上古大神设计师Gilbert Albert 在上个世纪五六十年代为百达翡丽设计的作品，我几乎每一支都喜欢。

喜欢是一回事，但收藏起来就是另一码事😅尤其是这些不对称系列的腕表，找一支都难，更别说一套了。

这里面，我最偏爱的型号就是3422。资料显示，黄金版本存世已知仅有5枚。稀有自然加分，但更让我着迷的则是它的造型：明明静静待着，却好像是一直在跳舞。

而在本就极为稀有的3422里，我又有幸找到了这枚锤纹表壳的版本。表面质感和壳型，都和我原本那支有区别，很有意思。
