Vintage refret time!! Wait a minute…it might always be vintage refret time around here! Definitely fret time for sure! Lord only knows how many of these I’ve done…lots of my life spent doing this labor! Maybe not 10s of thousands but definitely many many many thousands!! Vintage refrets are not always fun. I’ve done a lot of first time replacements on very old guitars but that was not the case here…I inherited lots of other techs decisions in refretting this neck one of which is irreversible. I never put anything heavier than a mill smooth file on the sidewall of these oldies. And a very old and worn one at that. Well like I said I inherited other techs decisions. At some point the sidewall was attacked hence making it champhered (angled)…now the hardest part of this job because of this is keeping the playing surface of the fret as long as possible and still be able to “flush” the frets ends. I never do refrets like these as an entire install, instead I do these in groups of four or five frets at a time. This way you can control smaller areas without having to push so hard on your file. This helps with controlling the hour glass effect on the side wall as well as flushing the frets ends without removing finish or wood!! Hey at least the last tech didn’t cement the frets in…this removal was pretty straightforward and no problems. Which I consider a bonus as sometimes that’s the hardest part!! 😂. Well I’m pretty happy with this one! Hopefully my customer will be happy too!! Ok on to a couple of 67 refrets. Where’s the voltaren again??!!🤘😎

Another Dann Huff wiring job through the shop. I’ve been doing about one of these a week lately. In case you’re wondering, I really like the Demeter mb/fat control. I’ve been installing these in guitars almost 40 years now. 😬😂 great buffer! very transparent! Useable which makes it useful!! A lot of people try to do this circuit and end up asking for help. There is 60+ points to this circuit. You need them all to be right for it to work properly. Troubleshooting can be confusing so I get it when guitarists or techs say “help me”. I’m always happy to do so! This circuit was pretty standard stuff back in the late 80’s early 90’s. While working with #sammysanchez at Nadine’s music, My good friend @mark_bla_bla_bla ,who also worked at Nadine’s, was always helping me figure out circuits. He had the best way of explaining signal flow. Knowing the components and what they were designed to do was key back then. There was no internet to google a diagram. A guitar player would come in and say “I want my guitar to do this”, and you’d jump in and figure it out! So Mark was such a blessing to me! Man that whole crew from Nadine’s was top notch and the go to for all the big time musicians in LA! Crazy…I’m so lucky to have been apart of that scene. Anyways, pretty much every time I pick up the soldering iron I think of Mark. We shared a lot of great times together in “Hollyweird” . There’s been lots of great people in my journey. I’m so grateful to have been taught and influenced by some of the all time greats! Mark you’re the best! I miss seeing you my friend…thank you for all the help and especially for your friendship!! I use that iron every day, so you’re always in my thoughts! 🙏🏻🤘😎

Always a great way to start off the week! Many of the guitarist guitars I work on weren’t even born in the great decades of music. So glad to have been alive then and participating in those scenes !! 80s were the best! Have a great week!! 🤘😎

Jeff Surratt makes great pedal steels!! I used to do a lot of wiring for his guitars but they were getting really crazy and customers were always changing their minds…so it started NOT being fun. I’m talking about wiring intricate delays on board and such. 😬. Anyways Jeff asked me to do this one for him and of coarse I said yes!! Anyone that knows Jeff, knows what a stand up guy he is, I will always help my friend!! Another killer build Jeff!! Thank you for your friendship over these many decades now!! Sunday is a funday and a day to try and catch up!! See you next week!

She’s shinny now! On to the next one!! #00steelwool is the forgotten steel wool but a go to for me. I finish my sanding process with 00, 000, and 0000 steel wool. Little clean up afterwords but well worth it. Another note…guitar players ask me all the time…what parts etc. do I like prefer and so on…. I will say this…. @musikraftusa makes the best necks! Quality construction! Super easy to work with and totally worth the money!! “You get what you pay for” is so true with them. I’ve toured with their necks, built guitars with their necks, had custom specs produced by them for custom collaborations. If you’re in the market for a neck, I can not recommend them enough!! If it was built by them you will never lose your money! Ok on to the next one now!!

David @brickhousetoneworks does it again! @onward_and_edward introduced me to him about a year ago now and have been blown away by his pickups ever since! You know everyone uses all the same stuff to build pickups, but not everyone can pull off the production quality and craftsmanship that David produces. From the bobbins he creates to the treatment and customization of the magnets he uses… just amazing! Do yourself a favor and try a set of Brickhouse Toneworks !! My good friend @chriscottros had me install this 63 aged set in his @k_lineguitars. Oh man!, his K-Line Strat is my all time favorite Strat. Over the years. I’ve installed all kinds of different sets in this workhorse…but just checking the guitar through my solid state bass amp you could tell that these pickups have something special!! Go check’em out! Thanks Chris and David!
🤘😎
