* ੈ ➴ The Infinite State by Richard Swan πŸͺ

⭐️ This dystopian sci-fi opens with Katherine Fuller, a privileged woman who is looking to purchase a new planet after inheriting her husband’s fortune to escape a fascist galaxy-spanning Empire and build a democracy from scratch.

The social commentary on totalitarianism is also woven into the stories of two other characters: Julian Yashego, a foreign hypersled racer, and Cyprian Reis, a jaded investigator. So we get a formula 1 and a murder mystery subplots.

These three POVs show different facets of life under this party governing over the Decurion Empire. To name a few, there's a pervasive surveillance infringing on domestic life, constant propaganda through state-controlled medias and many forms of violence that reflect the Empire’s obsession for order and false consensus.

Eventually, the three seemingly independent storylines converge in the last 30% in a satisfying way! I read that part in one go (plot twists! epic battles! 🀩). Absolute cinema.

I always love good villains in books. Here, Jaroslav Droor, the Minister of Information, was delightful to read about. Sly, cunning, and always leaving you guessing his next move.

This book is very much a political thriller. I really enjoyed it even though I wished the examination of political concepts wasn’t so heavy-handed at times. It touches upon the fragility of democratic institutions as well, which I hope will be further explored in the next books.

Autumn Hopefuls πŸ‚πŸŽ§

Not a tbr, just some books I've got on my radar, and am hoping to read this season. I'm also planning on playing the upcoming Fire Emblem game when it'll be released, so September won't be a busy reading month for me. 🀭

π˜™π˜¦π˜’π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘱π˜₯𝘒𝘡𝘦
β€’ The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig didn't woo me (very sad about this πŸ’”), so I won't be continuing with The Knave and the Moon...
β€’ 60% into The Infinite State by Richard Swan; it's pretty amazing so far. Futuristic F1 x 1984 Γ— Blade Runner 2049 vibes. 🀌

πŸ’ Lemme know which books you're most excited to read this season!

* ੈ ➴ The Scorched Throne duology by Sara Hashem πŸ—‘

πŸŒ… This Egyptian-inspired political fantasy follows Sylvia, the fugitive queen of Jasad. After years of living in hiding, her past finally catches up to her, and she is forced to strike a deal with her greatest enemy, Arin of Nizahl.

πŸ‘‘ From then on, the plot unfolds with a blend of political tension and forbidden magic. At the heart of it all, it's about two people struggling between what is expected of them and what they feel.

Sylvia and Arin were such compelling MCs to follow. Individually, they were solid characters whose personalities and actions made sense for their upbringing. While Sylvia may have simply seemed hotheaded, and Arin calculating at first, they became so much more nuanced than that over the course of the story. They felt very human.

What stood out most was the way their relationship was portrayed. The romance was like a slow simmer, built on a subtle type of intimacy rather than big declarations or flowery prose. Their loyalty to one another became unmatched despite their rough beginnings as enemies.

The worldbuilding was given depth without being overly complex, book 1 provided just enough information to understand the geopolitical landscape of the kingdoms and establish how the pieces are set up on the board.

It was in book 2 that everything, including the historical and mythical aspects, was truly fleshed out through the multiple POVs we get. The scope of the story was wider, and the side characters were given way more importance by having their backstories explored and playing a bigger role in the plot.

β˜† Special mention goes to Jeru. What a loving and effortlessly funny guy. 🀎 by @pagesatdawn

2010s YA book series that raised me πŸŒŸβš”οΈ

Autumn is on the horizon and I feel myself coming back to life, it's been awhile booksta <3 I'm getting a lil nostalgic as summer is coming to an end so here's a few of the many books that were staples of my teenage years in the 2010s.

Back then, it was the beginning of the dystopian wave in the YA genre, and I remember finishing The Hunger games hungry for more.

+ random but Adelina from The Young Elites was the fmc who sparked my love for anti-heroes hehe 🫢

πŸ’ Do we have any favs in common? What were the YA novels or series that shaped you? by @pagesatdawn

Reading update πŸ“šβ˜†

𝑳𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅
πŸ¦‹ Queen of Faces by Petra Lord πŸ¦‹
I had such a good time with this book. It's a blend of many things I enjoy, woven in a unique way.

Urban fantasy, dark academia, and dystopia; there's an exploration of gender identity in a queer normative world, a FMC stuck in a boy's body and a ragtag group of mercenaries pulling off heists (found family trope!!).πŸ•Ί
The quote in the 4th slide had me in shambles, I can't wait for the sequel.

π‘ͺ𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒔
β€’ The Unicorn Hunters by Katherine Arden
I 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 the Winternight trilogy, so naturally, I was very excited to dive into Arden's upcoming novel.

* ੈ ➴ Red City by Marie Lu πŸ₯ƒ

We are so back. I grew up with Marie Lu’s books as a teenager. Reading her adult fantasy debut was like coming home to a familiar voice, only with a grittier story.

πŸŒ† In Angel City, two rival crime syndicates control the practice of alchemy and the distribution of β€œsand” (basically magical crack). Sam and Ari, childhood friends turned star-crossed lovers, were recruited and trained into alchemists by their respective syndicates in order to shift the tides of this conflict.

🌟 This book asks, how far are you willing to go to save your loved ones? Which sacrifices are worth your ambitions for greatness?

Alchemy was a crucial element in this gang war. I appreciated how Marie Lu explored the potential of alchemy and laid the groundwork of this magic system at the beginning of the book as we learn some of its possibilities with the protagonists, so that it served the cinematic action sequences later on.

Red City also approached themes like the alienating ability of money and the immigrant experience with a lot of care. Sam’s complex dynamic with her Chinese immigrant mother was written with such authenticity that it hit wayyy too close to home.

I really had a soft spot for Sam. Her desire for more than what life had to offer and the way she constantly questioned her stance on things made her a reflective character. Loved her chapters the most.

Ari is another character I felt empathy for, his loneliness, his love for his family. πŸ’” I’m curious to see in which direction Marie takes him in the sequel.

The love triangle took me by surprise, but it was actually believable. I was rooting for Will (if evil, why hot?). He was a magnetic, nuanced, and manipulative character, which made his relationship with Sam very compelling to follow.

Now I need book 2 ASAP 🀲

🏹 the five-star book tag! β˜†

Let me know if we have some five stars in common!

Clearly I wasn't able to pick five books for each category, but I wasn't about to add random books that didn't truly fit so yeah. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

And also, it doesn't mean that I haven't found any flaws at all in the books I've given five stars to, it's mostly a reflection of my own personal enjoyment and judgement of the books. 😌

As for the last slide, I guess you're seeing me at a very AKotSK time of my life.πŸ•Ί

* ੈ ➴ The Poet Empress by Shen TaoπŸ‰

πŸͺ In short: Desperate to save her family and village from starvation, Wei Yin offers herself as a concubine to the cruel prince of House Azalea, Terren. To survive, she has to nagivate court politics and learn poetry magic in order to compose the most powerful of all spells.

So, did I finish this book or did this book finish me? Because this was emotional open-heart surgery with no anesthesia and I loved it 🫑

Since Wei Yin is a rice farmer's daughter, she struggled with moral dilemnas because she had to learn how to play the game in a court full of scheming and betrayal while holding onto her roots. Her rise to power arc was 🀌🀌 my girl was so resilient and resourceful. Through her, Shen Tao made an interesting commentary on class and gender disparity as well as literacy as a tool for one's liberation.

It was also a villain origin story when it came to Terren, the heir to the throne. Flashbacks about his past with his brother Maro were interspersed within the book, which made them multi-layered characters as they grew from kind children to jaded, ruthless men fighting for power. Terren is an irredeemable villain but he has tragedy in his veins, and I couldn't hate him by the end.

If you're a fan of c-dramas and The Apothecary Diaries, you will probably enjoy this. However please note that this isn't romantasy, it's a dark fantasy novel. πŸ–€

* ੈ ➴ A Dowry of Blood by S.T Gibson

"I made you into my private Christ, supplicated with my own dark devotions."

That was quite a haunting read. It's a fairly short reimagining of Dracula's brides told through letters from Constanta to Dracula. I'm always down for vampire stories and this one pulled me in very easily with S.T Gibson's poetic and enthralling writing.

Constanta recounts centuries spent by her husband's side as her love and devotion for him quietly turn into anger, resentment and a yearning for freedom. The descriptions of her ambivalent feelings, her jealousy, her sorrows were really poignant.

Dracula eventually ensnares two more people in this gilded cage by preying on their vulnerabilities. Magdalena, an aristocrat and Alexi, a struggling artist. While they were endearing, I wish we could've spent a little more time getting to know them. Their relationship with Constanta and they way they all protected each other was so sweet.

🩸Main themes:
- polyamory
- toxic relationships
- obsession and power
- the passage of time

To anyone who's into gothic literature and vampires, I think this is worth a shot!

πŸͺ Back again with another book tag! β˜† πŸ”

I've seen a few people do it and wanted to join in, it was really fun ✨️

Sun β€’ a book that brings you joy
β€”β˜† Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries
This one definitely sparks that starry-eyed, heart full of merriment kind of joy

Moon β€’ a book with all the feels
β€”β˜† The Kite Runner
'War doesn't negate decency. It demands it, even more than in times of peace.' Two boys in Afghanistan, heaps of emotional damage

Mercury β€’ the smallest book you own
β€”β˜† Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom

Jupiter β€’ the longest book you own
β€”β˜† The Dragon Republic
658 pages. Blew through it in one week-end.

Earth β€’ a bookish world you'd love to visit
β€”β˜† Wait where the shooting star falls
The story and the setting are both whimsical and enchanting, it's about a land where shooting stars become witches and they have cat familiars! πŸˆβ€β¬›

Mars β€’ a book based on mythology
β€”β˜† Circe
Good introduction to Greek mythology retellings

Neptune β€’ a book that's part of a series
β€”β˜† Jade City
Imagine the Godfather set in an Asian metropolis with magic, martial arts and obviously, morally grey characters. Loved it🫢

Pluto β€’ an underrated book
β€”β˜† Malice
A 'whydunit' rather than 'whodunit' type of mystery crime thriller, plot twists galore!

Venus β€’ a book with summer vibes
β€”β˜† Kafka on the shore

Uranus β€’ a book with winter vibes
β€”β˜† The Bear and the Nightingale

Saturn β€’ a book with a pretty cover
β€”β˜† Daughter of the Moon Goddess
The gorgeous cover drew me in but the story wasn't compelling sorry

πŸŽͺ 'The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.'

As many visitors of the circus have said, it was like stepping into a fairy tale under a curtain of stars. This novel was highly atmospheric with a dreamlike quality to it, Morgenstern's lyrical prose lending itself well to the beautiful imagery and eerie, mystical experience she takes the reader through. Definitely one of my fave books of all time. πŸ’«

I've read it years ago so I can't tell you for the life of me what the plot was about, and I doubt it was the point of the novel. It was more so about the 'Cirque des ReΜ‚ves', its enigmas and the lives of performers and visitors of the circus.

🀍 I'm sure many of you are familiar with The Night Circus, have you enjoyed it? Would you recommend The Starless Sea, also by the same author?
