What Remains

An idea I’ve been carrying with me since 2015, now coming to fruition through the passage of time and the experiences that have shaped it.

What began as a question of how one sustains a studio practice without a studio has, through the trials and tribulations of life, evolved into a deeper understanding of what What Remains truly means.

What do we carry, physically and emotionally? Where do we find sovereign spaces to release what we can no longer hold?

What Remains is an ongoing, participatory extension of my artistic practice, inviting individuals to offer objects that hold personal histories: old paintings, hair, clothing, and other materials that have accompanied them through life.

Some will be cut, deconstructed, and sewn into new paintings. Others will be burned, their ashes transformed into pigments to give out to the community. Through these processes, what once existed in one form will find its way into another.

This practice of collecting, transforming, and preserving traces of others has already found its way into my work, including my 2023 exhibition, Phantom Thread. Alongside the physical materials, I maintain a book recording the names of participants, which accompanies the work into exhibitions. Even as their offerings take on new forms, their participation remains part of its history.

Over the coming years, I will also be collecting oral histories and personal testimonies, documenting the memories, places, and experiences attached to the things we choose to relinquish.

At its heart, What Remains is an exploration of catharsis, transformation, and the possibility of release. Nothing simply disappears. It is repurposed, reconstituted, reborn.

With the hope of eventually reaching all 50 states, I am seeking spaces, communities, and collaborators interested in hosting future iterations of the project.
