Today is JUNETEENTH. It is commemorated to mark the day in 1865 when Union troops reached Galveston and the last enslaved people in Texas learned they were “free”, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. At the beginning of the Civil War, there were approximately 4 MILLION ENSLAVED PEOPLE. It is a fitting day to consider how that freedom was won and how our fellow Americans experience racism still in their daily lives today. Because most of us were taught the history of the Civil War incorrectly. And because many of us still do not comprehend the systemic racism that is still present today. Please, read books and blogs and TALK to your fellow human beings who are black, indigenous or other people of color. You simply cannot understand if you are only looking through the lens of your own lived experience. ✌🏽✌🏾✌🏿🖤 by @paigewildly

Some people in this current administration (Pete Hegseth, among others) think women shouldn’t vote.

I don’t think I need to put into words what I think about that. An emoji or two will do 🤬🖕

ETA: and this was only for WHITE women. Black (BIPOC) women’s right to vote was not provided or protected until 1965. by @paigewildly

Today is my birthday. I usually celebrate the whole month but this year is a little different, for several reasons… But mainly because we had to say goodbye to our Juniper on Friday, January 31st. My Junie. Our best best girl 💝 Brawny is beside himself, of course. Which is making it all the more heartbreaking but we are living each day trying to find our new normal ❤️‍🩹
So, today, in honor of her, I will enjoy a walk in the sunshine. And know, she will be right by my side, just like she was in life, always.
