The tour is this week, and training is nearly done, and Lorimer’s latest update is all about the Protectometer.

It’s a tool for making sense of some of the complexity of chronic pain by looking at five areas of life that can influence pain: your general health, past experiences, current environment, beliefs and behaviours.

Understanding how these different factors can influence pain can also help us understand how the pain system might be retrained to become less protective over time.

Have a listen to Lorimer explain the Protectometer, and how it can help us start planning a way towards resilience and recovery by @painrevolution

Meet Kay, another rider joining us for the Tour 👋

Adventure isn’t exactly new to Kay. Hiking, rock climbing, rowing and trail running have all made the list.

Cycling, however, was a different story.

“I hadn’t ridden a bike regularly since I was a kid, and it wasn’t long ago that the very idea of clipping myself to a bike seemed appalling.”

But when the Rural Outreach Tour was heading through her local region, Kay, an osteopath and pain educator, decided to say yes.

“I love what Pain Revolution is doing and wanted to do whatever I could to help bring better pain education to regional communities.”

So, she bought a bike, clipped herself to it and started riding. A lot.

As for what 780km over eight days will actually feel like?

“At this point, I’m quite happy to remain blissfully ignorant.”

We’re excited to have Kay joining the peloton and taking on a very different kind of adventure!

Meet Tim, back for another Rural Outreach Tour 👋

For Tim, taking on hundreds of kilometres on the bike is about much more than the riding.

“Great opportunity to spend a week with fantastic people and spread the word about modern science into rural Australia.”

Having been part of Pain Revolution before, it’s the people, the learning and the impact in regional communities that keep him coming back.

“I have learnt so much from the people on Pain Rev. It’s challenging physically but so rewarding.”

And this year, he’s particularly looking forward to getting the Pain Rev family back together.

“Catching up and spending time with the Pain Rev family, helping spread the word about modern pain science in the Northern Rivers.”

We’re excited to have Tim back in the peloton for another week of riding, learning and sharing better pain education along the way!

Meet Lorimer, Pain Revolution’s founder and the person who started the Rural Outreach Tour.

As a pain scientist and physiotherapist, Lorimer has spent decades trying to better understand chronic pain and find better ways to help people challenged by it.

He’s also seen just how much thinking around chronic pain has changed.

“As a physiotherapist working in a pain management program, I observed that the central message of ‘living well despite pain’ did not resonate with patients.”

Over the last 25 years, pain science has moved forward considerably. For Lorimer, that means the conversation can move beyond simply managing or learning to live with pain.

“The pain field now knows enough to offer anyone who has pain on most days for more than three months scientifically-based hope and a new sense of what life might be possible.”

The problem is that access to this knowledge and support isn’t equal.

“I WAS surprised to learn how little support people dealing with chronic pain can access, especially in rural and regional areas.”

That gap is a big part of why Pain Revolution exists, and why Lorimer continues to get on the bike for the Rural Outreach Tour.

“I ride because Pain Revolution’s mission and method are outstanding and unique, effective and efficient, science-based and sustainable.”

And after all those kilometres, there is apparently one other thing that keeps him coming back...

“Oh, and we seem to only ever attract Complete Legends.”

This October, Lorimer and the peloton will take that message of better pain understanding, scientifically-based hope and recovery across Northern NSW.

This training ride came with a little help from family.

Lorimer was joined by his son for a ride up Mount Lofty, and it got him thinking about the role family can play when someone is challenged by chronic pain.

A shared understanding, knowing someone’s strengths and limitations, and being kind, supportive and sometimes a little assertive can make a real difference.

If someone in your family is living with chronic pain, join us at one of our Northern NSW Tour events this October to better understand their pain, what recovery can look like, and how you can support them along the way. by @painrevolution

Meet Jase, back for his fifth Rural Outreach Tour 👋

Jase is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and founder of Your Move Health, where he works with people living with complex health conditions, including persistent pain.

“I spend most of my working week helping people re-engage with movement in a way that is safe, builds confidence and allows them to gradually regain physical capacity.”

Through his work, Jase sees first-hand how pain can take people away from the things they love and the parts of life that matter most.

That’s what keeps bringing him back to the Tour.

“I’m looking forward to being part of a movement again that aims to improve the quality of care for Aussies living with pain.”

We’re very happy to have Jase back in the peloton for round five!

Lorimer’s latest training block brings us back to one of Pain Revolution’s essential pain facts: persisting pain can overprotect us and prevent recovery.

In this update, Lorimer explains how the pain system can become more sensitive over time, why things like stress or illness can make pain worse, and importantly, how that sensitivity can also change in the other direction.

It’s a difficult journey, but a doable one, with understanding, skills, practice and support. And that support can start with something pretty simple: being kind.

Good days and bad days are part of the journey, whether you’re training for a bike ride or retraining your pain system.

In his latest training update, Lorimer talks about the ups and downs of recovery and some of the promising work happening in pelvic pain and endometriosis.

As he puts it, recovery isn’t necessarily easy, and it certainly isn’t always tidy. But there are reasons to be hopeful.

Meet Nick, another rider joining us for the Tour 👋

Nick’s connection to chronic pain started long before he became a Pain and Rehabilitation Physician.

“When I was 18, I injured my right arm rock climbing. What followed was four years of chronic pain, loss of identity and depression.”

Finding his way through that experience inspired Nick to study physiotherapy. Working with others living with long-term pain eventually led him to medicine and dual specialisation in Rehabilitation and Pain.

“I came to realise that pain involves all of our body systems and so many areas of our lives. I wanted to understand that better and find better ways to help.”

That’s also what brings Nick back to the Rural Outreach Tour.

“I ride because I believe empowering people with knowledge of how pain works is one of the best ways we can address the huge burden of chronic pain in Australia.”

For Nick, it’s about helping more people understand pain, the body’s ability to change, and what might be possible on the other side of their own pain experience.

“I hope we can help people move through their pain experience to a place where they’re able to live full and satisfying lives.”

We’re excited to have Nick in the peloton, sharing both his professional knowledge and lived experience along the way.
