We had about 15 artists who worked together over the course of a week to make all of the paintings that these details are taken from. Our roster of participants is different each show but generally about a third of us have been working together on these projects for over 15 years, with another third of the crew that's been on board for 5 or less and then a final chunk who are brand new to the group each time. Most of us know each other through art school in one way or another. So whether we're former classmates, students/teachers or small town art homies were basically 3 generations of artists ranging in age from our early 70's to early 20's who choose to get together independently once a year to make something wild and have some laughs. People are always curious about the mechanics of the collaboration and how we manage to repeatedly freestyle these big projects with tight production schedules and a ton of variables while keeping things mostly peaceful amongst so many sensitive little flowers. For the most part it's a pretty organic process where we try not to make too many rules or parameters about what we're going to do and just feel our way through it together with respect and flexibility. Anybody is allowed to work on anything or to rework anything they can improve and the goal is to make something where all our personal styles get mixed up to the point that something explosive and surprising that doesn't really look like any of our work individually emerges. It's not an easy thing to do once let alone sustain for 20 years, but there's a magic that comes from it that's difficult to produce any other way so we can't seem to quit. In the last week of May, the artist collaborative Paintalica got together in Portland, Oregon to mark the group's 20th anniversary. This time we had a crew of about 15 people who improvised for a week together to paint an inflatable cathedral sculpture we had made. All this painting was done in 7 days and the energy created from this intense way of working is hard to really describe. Paintallica has been a lot of things over the years with important contributors coming and going and new voices being added to the mix continually, but in the end it feels like it might just be a big experiment to see what happens when a bunch of artists get together and try to reconnect with the joy of just making stuff for fun while consistently banging out the most technically demanding artisanal fart jokes in the game. We'll have more to share over the coming days as we sift through the documentation but in the meantime we've got a little bit of merch left over from the event that's available now in our online shop if you feel like checking it out. Attention Portland!!! ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ Our latest show "A Few Questions About the Rules" is approaching the end of its run over at @buildingfive but you still have a chance to come see it this Friday and Saturday!!! Come down for the closing reception on Friday June 21st 6-10pm to have a beer with us, grab some merch and check out what a gang of independently minded artist friends can produce together in 7 days. Or if you're more the procrastinating day walking type, you can swing by on Saturday the 22nd from 10-2 to catch it right before we pack it all in for the year. Paintallica's A Few Questions About the Rules has twin openings this weekend at Building 5 in Portland from 10-4 on Saturday and Sunday in conjunction with the @nwmarineartworks open studios event. Hey everybody👋 Just letting you know that we have some new merch up in our shop in case you got poop stains on all your other paintallica shirts. We also got some new stickers in case you also got poop on those (we know you're dirty and we love you more because of it). We only did a limited run of both this year so get em while you can. In case anyone is curious, we're almost exclusively self funded and we rely on merch sales to keep this lil dream alive. So if you like what we do and want to see more from us, consider grabbing something for yourself or one of your many derelict friends who are probably really into the idea of making believe in themselves. by @paintallica

Another wild week, another bad ass show! What you see here are some pics from a show called Make Believe in Yourself made by PAINTALLICA in Minneapolis between 9/23 and 9/29 through an intense collaboration between 10+ artists who gather once a year to make something unpredictable and challenging together. We'd like to thank our friends @northeastsculpture for the invitation and support throughout the week and the hearty Minneapolis folks who came out in a crazy thunderstorm to see the show. Y'all have a cool thing going on and we're grateful for your friendliness and generosity. We'd also like to thank @letzelter_pdx and the amazing students in the @printmediamfa program for their help producing the monumental woodcut prints you see in the show. The prints were real stunners and there's no way we could have pulled them off without you all!
