I titled this painting “Somewhere between Eden” These new figurative works seem to take on a life of their own after a while. When a new idea suddenly strikes, I try to capture it in the moment. The creative process leads and I just follow behind.

I could have spent many more months adding to and reworking this painting. Areas are left unfinished and unresolved. That quality feels more human and coincides with the themes of this new series.

Sometimes it feels like I have to surrender them. As if to say I’m just a vessel for something else, something bigger that happens through me when creating art.

Been thinking a lot about how many differing versions of ourselves we carry around with us.

The person we have been, the person we thought we may become, the person we are around others. Some of those versions may dissipate into obscurity while others seem to cling on for better or worse.

That’s becoming an important theme of these new paintings for me I think. Letting the figures overlap, disappear, fracture, get painted over and/or completely erased. I’m less interested in who or what each figure is and much more interested in them existing in the same world.

the paintings become about an idea itself. How unstable it can truly be. Maybe it’s about truth. How much of it is memory. How much of it belongs to us, and how much of it was given to us. I’m becoming more and more certain that we are all having a Collective experience not a separate one.

I want the painting to feel like holding onto a memento or memory you never want to let go of.

It’s the little things that matter most. Been wondering a lot about the way memory distorts our ordinary moments. How the people, places and little things get rearranged or distorted over time. What is remembered might be more of a feeling or projection of yourself. I imagine these recent abstracted figurative works of mine become closer to self portraits than narratives/memories in that way. Interesting thought, anyways…thanks for watching.

I am loving the quieter abstract moments in this one. Cropped down, they become less about representation and more about texture, color, and the mark making. Recently I’m interested in that juxtaposition where the abstract begins to resemble us, and our sense of self feels like a gathering of moments or fragments that are pieced together through our memory/experiences. The abstraction begins to parallel what it feels to be human.

Come see a few of my newest paintings at the opening of HAGS II, w/ @bruceluriegallery | a group exhibition | July 25 (Sat), 6-8 pm

For the past year or so I’ve continued expanding upon the Menagerie of Souls painting, developing a new abstract figurative body of work. Each painting has become another exploration of the same unfolding conversation.

This new work, “The Comings and Goings” explores the flux of our innermost lives. The parts of ourselves that linger and potentially even disappear. Identity feels like something we possess for a while and then return to a former version of ourselves as we grow through life. At least for me this rings true.

Recently I’ve been painting these works more instinctively, following the relationships between each figure as they emerge rather than planning them all in advance. Using references from Old Master paintings and sculptures, I blend the figures positions and collapse them into one another. The boundaries soften, and meaning accumulates through layers, often painting over entire figures and blocking in new ones.

What remains is less a finalized portrait and more a study into the psychological territory of the human condition and our collective experience. Mine. Yours. Ours. This is the place where memory, transformation, and contradiction start to form.

Maybe we’re all just passing through ourselves and each other over and over again. Like when a dream feels too real. I enjoy the idea of time as an expansive, non-linear entity, a matter of perception as it relates to another point in time. Similarly to how objects acquire more meaning in relationship to each other in space.

What is the space between things?

It is the nothingness of everything that compels me to find joy in everyday moments—the blessing and improbability of existing now, and experiencing a life.
