I have been busy, but the work I have been doing is super secret, and only now can they be revealed!
I did these pet portraits for The Burbank Animal Shelter's fundraiser, Ruffly Drawn. @thevbas If you missed this year, next year you can submit a picture or your pet(s) and a small donation, and in return you get an artist's rendering. The fun part is that you never know who is going to be doing the artwork! So follow @thevbas and check out the animals and get your own pet portrait next time.

Here’s a progression of the portrait study I’ve been obsessing with. Some might say that I’m spending too much time and it’s no longer a ‘study’ for a larger piece. BUT I am using this opportunity to figure out color harmonies, trying new colors, and battling the complex and infuriating light sources creating challenges for rendering the forms. I lose the drawing, try to get it back, and then realize I did something else wrong. Ha! #portraitstudy #fineart #oilpaintings #portraitpainting #monheganlight #reflectedlight #portraitpaintingishard by @painterjoy

Another nifty reel of the progress on this portrait study. It’s a little tricky because there is a very soft blue light from above and a strong warm reflected light from the side. Plus a super strong sunny backlight. I lightened up the background to make it feel a bit softer and more airy. Lulu makes a brief appearance. She is always my painting pal. #portraitpainting #oilpainting #kitties #fineart #lightsources #naturallight #spedup #realism #contemporaryartist #monhegan #progress #workinprogress by @painterjoy

Some more progress on this portrait study. It was originally going to be a larger color study before I start the bigger portrait, but of course I’ve changed the whole color scheme three times already. My plan was to do a monochrome underpainting and then glaze, but that didn’t work, so now trying something new. #colorstudies #oilpainting #fineart #portraitpainting #neverendingchanges #alwayslearning # by @painterjoy
