This painting is about the experience of truly being open with your heart and vulnerable and the risk of love. I feel like I’m in a constant battle between my rational mind and my intense heart. When a connection ends my heart lingers on and it feels like I’m chocking on all the words I want to say. I wanted to capture this vulnerability and the heart strings that have been severed.

I think the feeling of loving another human connects me so deeply to every human that has came before me. You become apart of something, the thing that has inspired countless movies, poems, songs, art work, performances all based around this feeling of love. And that feeling of connection, even if it’s for a brief moment in time, is worth every week, month, or year it takes to move past it if it ends.

This painting is a slight departure from some of my previous works. I’ve never really done a landscape portrait so that was exciting! Also there are NO FLOWERS… which is crazy for me. I wanted to keep the color pallet pretty simple to just capture the feeling. This was a painting that kinda just came to me without a lot of sketching and drawing beforehand. This painting centers around my experience growing up and having to hide aspects of myself to avoid ridicule. It’s about having to straighten up parts of yourself to be accepted. It’s about the pain of resisting yourself and growing up with no guidance in a world where your told that your most natural human feelings are wrong and shameful.

I also wanted to show the beauty of homosexuality, of loving one another despite the looming cloud homophobia that covers this earth. However the sun will always come out, and queer people will always prevail. There will never be a world without homosexuals and transgender people.
