ALOHA NŌ ʻO KAʻŪ! Through a deep connection to ʻāina, ʻohana, and to one another, the ‘aʻali’i of Ka’ū are an inspiration in the face of adversity. In these difficult weeks following Hurricane Lala, we are reminded again of the strength of Ka’ū. This collection was already in the works and all proceeds from this release and others in the coming weeks will continue our efforts toward the ʻohana impacted. Kaʻū Moku Kamaʻehu- The Steadfast District  The ʻōhai grows along the coasts, enjoying the ocean mist.  There at Ka Lae, South Point, the plant crawls on the earth and keeps cool in the grass.  The name Ka Laeʻula, “The Red Point,” conveys the flowers that carpet the area, steadfast in the famous gales of Kaʻū.  This capsule is dedicated to the unflinching nature of Kaʻū’s natives.  Aloha nō ʻo Kaʻū! CALATHEA + SLOWTIDE! The calathea art has been with us for a long time. Offered as one of the original pareu arts, I hand-printed them and sold them at the first craft fairs! The ornamental grew in Hawaiian gardens, planted for the stunning, tall leaves with clean ribbings. The flower was comparatively small, often called the Rattlesnake Plant, because of its shape like a rattlesnake’s rattler. The afternoon dip in the ocean is always close especially when living in paradise! Refreshing too is when there’s a fresh water stream nearby.  Something about the cool water leaving the skin feeling silky… The quick-dry towel is a bonus when emerging from stream or ocean. Toweling off the excess wetness or even wrapping the soaked clothes, these towels are always kept in my truck - forever within reach! NANAKA Patterns in nature are the greatest library of design. Observing ʻāina and the multitude of motifs offer an unlimited resource of compositions!  Nanaka, for example, has been an inspiration to cultural decoration for hundreds of years. Because the ʻulu is a food source, there is an intimate connection, whether when peeling the skin or pulling it out of an imu, the patterns on the skin are familiar.

Playing with scale, big and small, we are treated to the motif’s subliminal energy. Similar to dry, cracked dirt, or bee’s wax, there is an emotional bond with patterns. Each composition motivates creativity and stirs the inner search for the parallels in the habitat we dwell.
