The Best parts and restorations for classic land rovers - our work and adventures!

POSTS STORIES REELS

We were really fortunate to work on this wonderful original one family owner 1960 88 station wagon. This US spec vehicle was special ordered and sent to Ethiopia where it was used by the current owners father who was a a geologist. After years of adventuring in Africa including multiple expeditions and even gun battles with roadside bandits - the vehicle was shipped to the US where it led a more pedestrian life until it was parked in the 70s. The son of the original owner contacted us telling us he wanted a mechanically outstanding Land Rover for a trip of a lifetime. For him this meant taking his Dads Land Rover on a cross country adventure zig zagging thousands of miles between national parks and sentimental places. The owner did not want a sterile cad plated “beach runner” for the vacation house. He wanted Dads Land Rover - original as possible - but dead reliable - capable of thousands of hard miles in any type of weather. Last week, after a 50 year hiatus from driving the land rover our customer completed his 4000m cross country trip in dad’s old truck without issue. The original engine, transmission, axles (in fact all mechanical parts down to the carb and generator) even the interior - all carefully mended - were back in top form. Thank you for trusting us with your project. #landrover #roadtrip #pangolin4x4 by @pangolin4x4

Malheur Wildlife Refuge - 1957 Land Rover 107 Station Wagon by @pangolin4x4

The foundation for 98% of big name production land rover shops is a reproduction chassis, poorly made offshore steering components, and generic low quality hardware. How is this 109 wagon rolling chassis different than others you might see? This one has it’s original chassis that has been galvanized and epoxy painted, 4 wheel disc brakes, genuine swivels steering relay and tie rods, our aluminum fuel tank, British made leaf springs, and all smaller components down to the original brake line clips are ceracoated. We strive to be better at every level from the components to coatings. #landrover #serieslandrover #groundup #pangolin4x4 by @pangolin4x4

Ike’s 80” head gasket field repair at Mendo Recce XXXII is “one for the log book” as commented by Jeremy Ainsworth. The recipe:
- stranded copper electrical wire stripped from casing, threaded to span gap with ends sandwiched between layers of copper head gasket
- JB Weld Classic formula to set wire ends
- JB Weld quick set spread over wire “bridge” to fill gaps and make solid diaphragm
- JB Weld muffler repair sealant, thin layer applied to each side of patch prior to install
- Install repaired gasket and cylinder head and let set overnight (~11-12 hours) prior to starting engine

Mendo Recce XXXII in the books! On the first trail outing of the weekend the head gasket failed in “The Cow”…but in proper Land Rover fashion, this mechanical setback became a group project back at camp, and with some ingenious improvising we were back on the trail the next morning!!!. The trails were muddy, but the weather was clear, and we got to do a little trail clearing and vehicle recovery to build our appetite for the epic Sat night potluck! Always a great event with awesome people.
