Talk & Panel Discussion: Voices of the Fandango — Women, Son Jarocho, and Tradition

📍 Thursday, 27 August, 19:00 hrs | Bar Tÿpo

How are women reclaiming and shaping musical traditions across borders?

Artist Sirani Guevara @si_ra_ni kicks off the session with a short keynote presentation about her experience in the center of a living tradition.

Afterward, researcher and singer Siboné Oroza, and Paola Nieto @paolaelean , member of Jaranas del Norte and Feminismoas Otroas, will join Sirani for a panel discussion. Together, they will introduce a general view on the role of women in traditional music.

Through the conversation, the panelists will share and exchange their perspectives on the role of women in musical traditions of distinct socio-cultural contexts and locations: from jaraneras in México, jaraneras in diaspora to the Bolivian cholitas movement.

FANDANGO x TEKSTIN TACO: June 13, 2026, Helsinki

K’u’um Collective’s monthly pop-up restaurant opens its kitchen once again at @bar_typo ! This time, Finnish and Mexican flavors get a fresh, fiery boost from the power of the gods of corn. Come and taste it!

The day will once again culminate in a Fandango led by Jaranas del Norte: a celebration where everyone is welcome to take part by playing, singing, dancing, or by simply being present!

In the afternoon, we will host zapateado percussive dance and strumming-technique workshops led by @paolaelean and @ecayari . In the workshops, you will explore foundational elements of son jarocho, as well as the cultural background of the tradition. In this folk tradition originating from the Veracruz region of Mexico, music, dance, and sung poetry intertwine.

RAKATA’s raw magnetic energy will blaze through electro Latin beats and techno music on Tÿpo’s dance floor until two+ in the morning.

Special thanks to our audience for being brave and fierce in letting go all their “tapujos” in their journey to the underworld.

Zapateado Workshop:
Dance and Rhythms for Son Jarocho.
13.6.2026 / 15:00-17:00 / Permantosali, Tekstin talo

In Son Jarocho, zapateado is a form of percussive dance performed on a wooden platform known as a ‘tarima’. It serves as a key rhythmic accompaniment where dancers stomp their feet in syncopation to the music. It is also the heart of a social and communal choreography where the dance, the music, and the community meet.

In this workshop, you will learn rhythms, basic footwork technique, and the use of the tarima as a shared dance floor. Everyone is welcome!

-Free entry / No previous experience required.

PLEASE BRING:
* Hard-soled shoes are preferred.
* Percussion instruments are also welcome for those who want to explore the rhythms from a musical perspective.

At the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to implement the techniques they’ve learned at the Fandango celebration, which will take place on the same June 13th in Bar Tÿpo (Lintulahdenkatu 3, Hki.) at 18:00.

(EN at comments) K’u’um Collectiven kuukausittainen pop-up -ravintola avaa jälleen keittiönsä @bar_typo ssa! Suomalainen ja meksikolainen makumaailma saa tällä kertaa raikkaan tulista lisäpotkua maissijumalten voimasta. Tule ja maista!

Päivä huipentuu jälleen Jaranas del Norten ohjaamaan Fandangoon: karkeloon, johon kaikki ovat tervetulleita mukaan osallistumaan soittaen, laulaen, tanssien, vain olemalla läsnä – tai sanoituksia rustaten!

Iltapäivällä järjestämme Paola Eleanin ja Kenji Pérez Naganon ohjaamat perkussiotanssi- ja soittotekniikka työpajat. Työpajoissa opit son jarochon rytmistä ja rakenteesta sekä perinteen kulttuuritaustasta. Meksikon Veracruzin alueelta lähtöisin olevassa kansanperinteessä musiikki, Zapateado -tanssi ja laulettu runous punoutuvat yhteen.
