NARAM

Whanganui-based musician and producer Naram has spent more than two decades studying the science of digital reggae and rub-a-dub.

Inspired by the artistry and technology of Jamaica’s 1980s recording studios, he composes, plays, records and mixes his own riddims using vintage instruments, analogue tape machines and a menagerie of antiquated studio effects.

In 2014, Naram was invited by German producer Disrupt to join the renowned Jahtari label. His resulting debut album, March of the Gremlins, won critical acclaim for its dark, idiosyncratic collision of nostalgia and futurism, launching a career that has since produced more than 40 vinyl releases on labels including Jahtari, Scotch Bonnet, Cubiculo, Irie Ites and Red Robin Records – the Aotearoa rub-a-dub label he co-founded.

His landmark 2020 album, Midnight Riders Meets the Naram Rhythm Section, was the culmination of five years’ work and two recording trips to Jamaica to work with legendary Waterhouse vocalist Midnight Riders. Released to international acclaim, it cemented Naram’s reputation as one of the most authentic modern purveyors of 1980s-style digital reggae and rub-a-dub.

In 2025, Naram returned with Musically Bad, a full-length collaboration with deadly Jamaican deejay Tippa Lee, recorded in Los Angeles and mixed to half-inch tape in Naram’s analogue Whanganui studio. Recent 12-inch releases have also seen him build, play and dub riddims for reggae royalty Linval Thompson, Sister Carol and Freddie McGregor.

Live, Naram performs his original riddims as an uncompromising live dub set, dismantling and rebuilding them in real time. Expect heavyweight basslines, haunted synthesisers and spontaneous excursions through roots, rub-a-dub and digital dancehall.

Red Robin presents a one off tour of Jahtarian proportions!

Disrupt - founder and boss of Leipzig-based label, Jahtari
Naram - co-founder and riddim composer behind Aotearoa’s premier rub-a-dub label Red Robin records .

The clash of the two digital reggae titans is coming to Aotearoa for two shows.

Whanganui @porridge_watson on Saturday September 26th
Auckland @galatos on Saturday October 3rd

Since 2003 Disrupt has been a trailblazer for the DIY 8 bit sound of Jahtari - and anyone who follows the evolution of 21st century reggae will be familiar with impact of this sound from the east Germany city of Leipzig.

Disrupt has helped bring back artists like Speng Bond, Mikey Murka, and Tikiman as well as playing a key role in busting modern artists like Pupajim, Solo Banton, Tapes, Kiki Hitomi - not to mention Naram himself!

Jahtari was also a catalyst for the birth of both Colonel Mustard and Red Robin Records - helping distribute their early records and find acclaim in the international market.

So the crew from Aotearoa have decided to bring him back for a pair of killer shows in Auckland and Whanganui.

Both Disrupt and Naram will play live dub sets in their own unique styles, amplified on the champion Reggae Rodeo sound system.

Kindly supported and caffeinated by the good people at High Noon Coffee Roastery

Freddie McGregor ft. Naram – Calling Mr Speaker

“Calling Mr Speaker” places Freddie McGregor over Naram’s fresh reconstruction of the riddim from Triston Palma’s “Face The Struggle”, originally produced by Linval Thompson in 1982. Built in Whanganui and mixed to tape, the production remains firmly rooted in the stripped-back Channel One rub-a-dub sound of the early 80s. McGregor recorded his vocal at Big Ship in Kingston in 2022, bringing his familiar authority to a riddim that fits him naturally.

Naram’s version opens up the rhythm before Hard Rubbish Horns take over with the full instrumental cut “Calling All Horns”. “Dubbing All Horns” then closes the four-track 12” with a deeper sound-system mix. A carefully executed second release from Rick Howe’s RICK label, connecting Jamaica, Aotearoa and Melbourne through one heavyweight riddim.

The Hard Rubbish Horns answer Freddie McGregor’s call on the flip side with a heavyweight call-and-response cut. More than just a horns version - it’s a call to arms.
