Who would we be without the arts?

• Acrylic and watercolour pencil on board

My new portrait series “Introspective” will explore how people interact with artistic expression in their everyday lives.

Whether it’s through the visual arts, dance, singing, or otherwise, the need to create is inherently human, and yet, we as a species are alienating ourselves from it. Cutting corners and demanding art be done “the right way”.

Art is individuality, it’s collaboration, it’s the makeup routine you’ve perfected over the years, and the way you like your eggs in the morning, it’s your chance to express yourself without fear of failure, your chance to be selfish and create for yourself, and whoever else it might resonate with.

We have an urge to say “I was human, and I was here”, that bus stop tag, the carved initial in tree bark. Rather than deciding what “good “ or “bad” art is, my series aims to refocus the arts as a means of self expression, not defined by guidelines, critique or rules. I look forward to sharing my work with you over the course of this series! by @papergriff

"Letting go".

-

I've done many self portraits over the years, it's become an unintentional way of documenting not only my artistic development but also my own evolution as a person. Undertaking a heavily digital degree meant putting my painting work on the back burner, something I'd like to change as a graduate.

This is the first portrait of mine that feels like me, I've struggled in previous paintings to find that likeness. It seems fitting that this portrait has come at the end of such a monumental period of my life, University is where I truly began to understand myself as a person and a creative. I stopped trying to be a 'good artist' and began to treat my craft like it is, my way of expressing, to not create for others, but to create for myself and whoever might find enjoyment through it too.

I've tried to break out of old habits through this piece, leaving behind the black backgrounds, working with a much warmer palette, from a reference photo that wasn't trying to break the mould.

It might have been over a year since my last painting, but the brush still fits in my hand and I still know my primary colours, so what more do I need.
