Happy days! Last week I was so excited to open the first box of my new jewellery tags and they look really cute with the jewellery.
I take my hat off to graphic designers. This redesign took longer than I’d expected. After a long period of exploration and choice paralysis in Canva I changed direction and used one of my beach photographs as the base of the design. Finally I arrived somewhere closer to the spirit of Papergull. Unfamiliar but satisfying work! 😅

It’s been awhile - today it’s time for a poem! ✍🏼 This poem is written by Ellen Bass.

Any Common Desolation

can be enough to make you look up
at the yellowed leaves of the apple tree, the few
that survived the rains and frost, shot
with late afternoon sun. They glow a deep
orange-gold against a blue so sheer, a single bird
would rip it like silk. You may have to break
your heart, but it isn’t nothing
to know even one moment alive. The sound
of an oar in an oarlock or a ruminant
animal tearing grass. The smell of grated ginger.
The ruby neon of the liquor store sign.
Warm socks. You remember your mother,
her precision a ceremony, as she gathered
the white cotton, slipped it over your toes,
drew up the heel, turned the cuff. A breath
can uncoil as you walk across your own muddy yard,
the big dipper pouring night down over you, and everything
you dread, all you can’t bear, dissolves
and, like a needle slipped into your vein—
that sudden rush of the world.

Ellen Bass, 2020

This week I played around with a strand of beads in the calm blue of Larimar. Such a pretty colour 🩵

These three designs are available now in my Etsy shop, just one of each for now! 💋

WINTER SOLSTICE

I chose to start this solstice with journaling, snug inside on the couch next to my movie watching boy. Doing the work of reviewing the past year, parsing the darkness for glimmers and meaning, dreaming of the return of light and energy - all this is *interesting* given the current health challenge of cancer, but in the end, a grounding and clarifying experience.

Later, the beach is calling. A long winter walk, followed by fireside cosiness.

Happy solstice to all! 🤍🪾

~

I love this artwork for today, the solstice. In a moment of serendipity I discovered Sophie Blackall’s landscape artworks here on Instagram last week and then realised she is the illustrator of a favourite children’s picture book I had been reading this past week during Library lessons at work. ‘Farmhouse’, a great book.

WINTERING

Last winter I read Wintering by Katherine May and although I have a stack of books lined up at the moment I would love to reread it. Highly recommend. So much gold. Here’s a couple of great, thoughtful pieces to muse on:

“We have seasons when we flourish and seasons when the leaves fall from us, revealing our bare bones. Given time, they grow again.”

“Here is another truth about wintering: you’ll find wisdom in your winter, and once it’s over, it’s your responsibility to pass it on. And in return, it’s our responsibility to listen to those who have wintered before us. It’s an exchange of gifts in which nobody loses out. This may involve the breaking of a lifelong habit, one passed down carefully through generations: that of looking at other people’s misfortunes and feeling certain that they brought them upon themselves in a way that you never would. This isn’t just an unkind attitude. It does us harm, because it keeps us from learning that disasters do indeed happen and how we can adapt when they do. It stops us from reaching out to those who are suffering. And when our own disaster comes, it forces us into a humiliated retreat, as we try to hunt down mistakes that we never made in the first place or wrongheaded attitudes that we never held. Either that, or we become certain that there must be someone out there we can blame. Watching winter and really listening to its messages, we learn that effect is often disproportionate to cause; that tiny mistakes can lead to huge disasters; that life is often bloody unfair, but it carries on happening with or without our consent. We learn to look more kindly on other people’s crises, because they are so often portents of our own future.”

Meet the newest necklace in the house, ‘Beachcomber’ is inspired by the colours of the coast. Think ocean blues, sandy dunes, weathered shells, and those long coastal walks that clear your head and slow everything down. This necklace was made to capture that feeling — natural, sunlit, and a little bit salty 🌊🐋🐚

Handmade, with every bead chosen to feel like a little piece of the Tassie coast. Exclusive to Etsy 🩵

Hi instagram buddies 👋🏻

It’s been unseasonably warm and dry for this late in Autumn lately, indeed the heat is a part of every conversation I’ve had this week. It finally feels a little more like normal this afternoon with some light rain.

I’m lucky to live amongst such abundant natural beauty; my camera roll is full of photos like these. Nature is endlessly inspiring and I’m grappling with how to infuse these coastal colours into my latest gemstone necklace design.

As is typical, my tiles are carefully curated for aesthetic impact. The reality of my camera roll lately contains far less palatable images: the post-surgery progress of my scar, screenshots of cancer related information and my son and his Dad trying on my new wig (those are actually delightful). It’s a week until I start chemotherapy and all I can say is this space is a wonderful distraction. I’m glad you are here 🫶🏼
