This work brings together sentences from books written across different countries, generations, languages, and historical contexts, revealing their shared concerns with human weakness, desire, self-deception, and collective psychology.

By extracting and rearranging these sentences into a new book, Nam separates them from their original authors and contexts and transforms them into a collective voice. Alongside these excerpts, the artist places his own cynical yet pragmatic statements, connecting past thought with contemporary realities.

Rather than offering a clear conclusion, the work explores the new meanings created through collision and recombination, reflecting humanity’s repeated attempts—and failures—to understand and overcome the same anxieties, desires, and mistakes.

“What Birds Say” assembles attempts to mimic bird songs in writing across 64 languages, compiled from dialogues with different native speakers. Side by side, these abstract word sequences from around the world unfold a poetry of their own – clumsy and charming at once, saying less about birds than about our longing to grasp the world in language. A dadaistic chorus of onomatopoeia that may connect us all to singing birds.
