National Award Recipient. One of the highest honors in the field for DEI. Being recognized at that level is honestly a little hard for me to talk about without feeling uncomfortable. I never want it to come across as arrogant, because the truth is this work has always been bigger than any one person. This is a very serious recognition for someone very unserious lol. But what I can say is that this work truly means a lot to me. To be recognized nationally like this at 37, especially with everything that has happened in the DEIB space and throughout my professional journey, is something I’m humbled by and grateful for. People spend entire careers hoping for opportunities like this, and I don’t take it lightly or for granted. Life has a way of surprising you. I don’t feel deserving of it, but I’m thankful for God’s grace in my professional path. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support along the way. It means far more to me than I could ever fully express. I love you all 🖤 by @papidodds

Ashia, It was an honor to be asked to help carry you to your final resting place, beside 5 other people I love and we know you loved tremendously. None of us ever imagined we would be doing this, especially not this soon. But even through the tears and disbelief I write this, we know you heard the words, “Well done.”Aunt Gail called you a L.I.G.H.T. yesterday, and that’s exactly what you were. The stories there and online shared are beautiful. Impact. To my family @nate_eugene_smith , I told you this privately, but I want to say it publicly hope it’s ok : I love you. You have carried so much these past few weeks, more than most will ever know. And as the texts slow and the calls fade, when it is just you and your grief, know you are not alone brother. The same way you asked me to help carry Ashia, I will carry you and Emmy for life.Whitney said something yesterday that stayed with me: “We try to measure grief by proximity, as if we need to qualify our pain to feel it.” And truthfully, I have asked myself did I even deserve to be asked to do something so sacred? Did I deserve to feel this pain?But from my earliest memories, to your final resting place, you were always there. And while my tears may slow with time, the memories and missing you never will. Fatherhood isn’t measured by perfection; It’s measured by presence. By showing up when you’re tired. By sacrificing things they may never even know you gave up. By staying in the fight.I’ve failed a lot in my life. I’ve made mistakes, made bad decisions, gotten things wrong, and had seasons where I questioned whether I was enough. But every setback taught me something, and every fall taught me how to get back up.That’s what fatherhood has taught me more than anything. I won’t always get it right with these four humans. There will be moments I need to apologize, moments I come up short, and moments I fall. But I’ll get back up every single time. Not because I’m perfect, but because they’re worth fighting for.People often tell me how blessed my children are to have me as their father. The truth is, I’m the one who is blessed.Of all the titles I’ve held and accomplishments I’ve achieved, none compare to hearing four voices call me Dad. That is my greatest honor and my greatest responsibility. Mistakes are inevitable. Failure is not.
