I always wanted to make one of these, but never felt consistent enough as a reader to do so. I decided I wanted to change that by holding myself accountable through this page.

WE ARE NEVER MEETING IN REAL LIFE: REVIEW

📚: memoir, 275 pages, medium-fast paced read, 4.25/5 rating
✍️: samantha irby
🏷️: themes of grief, mental illness, chronic illness, being a lesbian, dating mediocre men, dark humor, and resilience

This book opens up with an impromptu Bachelorette application which definitely sets the tone for the other hilariously sad stories that are contained in less than 300 pages. In the first 100 pages, we learn that Irby is fat, lazy, gay, and opinionated and I instantly felt right at home.

This book made me feel so seen and validated in all of my weird feelings about life, love, and the moralities of pet ownership. Needless to say, Samantha Irby is for the people. Also, pls check out her substack, it’s great.

THE DRAGON REPUBLIC REVIEW 🐉 (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

📚: fantasy, 600+ pages, medium-paced read, 3.75/5 rating
✍️: rebecca f. kuang
🏷️: themes of war, addiction, friendship, colonization, genocide, found family, and other depressing shit

WHEW, where do we begin? On my mama, it’s f*ck Nezha and Vaisra. But on a more serious note, Rin is a tragic tale of sacrifice, grief, and loss all in one character. She finally founds a group of people who are like her, and mostly accept her and has to see them be murdered because of her own actions. All hope in humanity is shattered, and the only thing she cares about is fighting a war that should have never been her problem.

Yet, she still cannot see that she is being played like a fiddle in the Federation’s hands. This was clearly the plan all along. Have the son of a War Lord become a shaman and then later molded into a weapon of mass destruction so that the Republic can enact their plan of world domination without getting their hands dirty. And then Rin came along….

I can’t wait to see the final showdown between her and Nezha. Is it bad that I think Rin should die? Given that she’s already on a downward spiral, and that she’ll most likely wipe out her own province after using them for manpower. She gotta go, just as much as Vaisra, Daji, and everyone else that’s already caused so much unnecessary damage.

Waking up early on the weekends to get some reading in >>>>

I’m so close to finishing this book, I literally cannot step away from it for too long or I get the itch to read lol.

Last night, I was thinking how this book isn’t as strong as The Poppy War, even though it’s considered to be the fan-favorite of the trilogy. Hopefully the ending changes my mind.

Light spoiler: Kitay is the GOAT. He’s become my new favorite character and I LOVEE seeing his growth as a person.
