Last night I opened my feed, shocked to see an article in the Guardian about a huge AI data centre towering over my old neighbourhood and home of 16 years, West Footscray in Melbourne’s inner west. A place that is still dear to my heart, where I bought a home, put down roots and became part of community that inspired me to start on this journey of building a life focused on regenerative values. Let’s not sugar coat it - this area of Melbourne has many toxic industrial legacies but the community had a vision to make it a liveable and sustainable place. Now they are faced with a new nightmare the #nextdc M3 data centre- buildings with noise and light and 100 diesel generators, using as much power as 200,000 residences and an entire regional town’s worth of precious water. So here’s the deal while our own state government tourism body is telling tourism operators to embrace AI (the generative kind that is fueled by these data centres) - we won’t unless forced to. An energy footprint for your business does not stop at your front gate. No ‘cute’ AI generated renders of our cows, no bots to answer your messages (ok so I have a cut and paste doc on my laptop that just needs a quick tweak to answer your questions specifically) and my wonky content with the typos (because I need to get around to getting better reading glasses). That’s it… it’s real, low fi and most importantly human and planet centred. by @paradiseroadfarm
NON AI flyer incoming!! Everyday I see small businesses who are under the strain of life in small business land resorting the cost and convenience of the AI flyer explosion. There's been a lot of hot debate about this on our local town Facebook page. Small businesses using it say they don't have a choice. But the reality of it is customers are saying they just don't want this! They want local businesses to be unique and authentic. Customers want human interactions not AI. Recent research by Choice Magazine found only 9% of customers think AI is making products and quality of services better and 51% say AI chat bots for customer service is making their experience worse. Caring about our environment (apparently developers are eyeing off farmland outside Sheffield for an AI data center) and managing the costs of rising energy and insurance costs means active engagement in generative AI makes zero sense for me so it will be avoided at all costs! I would encourage small businesses who are grappling with this to get in touch - perhaps I can pass on some tips on what I think constitutes a cheap and effective brand identity. PS acknowledgement of Speckle Park International (Breed Association) for use of their font and images. If only the AI tech bros acknowledged the creative inputs that informed their code. by @paradiseroadfarm
Look what yesterday delivered! (Yes they are twins) #springbabies #calfspam by @paradiseroadfarm
Installment two of 'Babies of Paradise Road Farm'. Earlier this year we posted about our baby calf Waka and his name sake a little baby girl called Waka who was born to Nozomi one of our working holiday volunteers from Japan. (As I speak Japanese I have hosted many staff and volunteers from Japan). Last Friday one of our pure bred cows gave birth a week early to our second spring calf for the year and her second daughter 'Home Leigh Dixie Belle'. (Don't worry short gestation is seen as quite a positive thing for beef producers). This was the very same day that the wonderful Ayame san (who among other things helped with the translation of our website into Japanese) gave birth to her first son back in Japan (She met her husband in Launceston when he was studying at the Maritime College and they married after she returned to Japan). In an even more remarkable connection, Dixie's Mum Saffy (SPT U10) arrived on the farm as a tiny month old calf while Ayame was staying with us back in 2023. by @paradiseroadfarm
Bringing the girls back from the secret paddock closer to the house ready for calving. My happy place. Love our (Canadian) girls. “It’s a Chicken’s world and we just live in it”…. I am getting close to a ‘reveal’ on an exciting new phase of the Paradise Road Farm story that’s been years in the planning and a year in the actual making. In the meantime I am missing a fence and a gate and the chicken free zone has very much now become the chicken zone. My builder has been getting daily passive aggressive photos of “what the chickens did next” to which he simply replied “I believe it’s the Chicken’s World and we just live in it” by @paradiseroadfarm
Beauty is where you find it. *even while you are waiting for your neighbour to come and give the side-by- side that died in the paddock a kickstart because the battery/alternator is a little bit dodgy and you didn’t put the charger on properly….sometimes life make you stop and take it in. by @paradiseroadfarm
Last holiday Monday’s keeping chooks busy and transplanting a new row of blueberry bushes gifted to me by Olivia from the former Plump Berries regeneratively focused berry farm. Yes that is FORMER thanks to an industrial capitalist driven food system that makes it almost impossible for small scale local vegetable and horticultural production to survive. If you have been to your local farmers market recently and found more coffee carts, artisan bakers and makers there is a reason for that. A combination of non scale appropriate regulations and things like insurance that fails to understand actual risk make it very difficult to earn a living wage from small scale farming and growing. It’s why you can come and stay on our farm! Because quite frankly there’s no way to earn a living wage off 100 acres of farming land in Australia in 2026. It’s been a difficult week on the non farming front too for much the same reasons. Regulation, certification and all the rest arose from a place when trust and connection were lost and the endless need for profit led the cutting of corners and dishonesty in the name of profit. How we move forward to build a truly localised and regenerative small scale business ecosystem when everything is stacked against it surely must be one of the great challenges of this time. by @paradiseroadfarm
Weaning day. Our hardworking Mamas off for a break in the back paddock It’s days like this when everyone is happy, calm and heading off where we ask them to go that make this job a joy. #thisfarminglife #grassfed #happycows by @paradiseroadfarm
The not so ‘usual’ welcome to Paradise Road Farm. Our famous goats had been off exploring the wilds at the far end of the farm but decided suddenly to come home and drop into the garden for the afternoon #tassieoffseason #goatsbeinggoats #welcometothefarm by @paradiseroadfarm
Sometimes when world is just a little bit shit … all you need is a goat 🐐 ❤️. Check in now for some #tassieoffseason goat lovin #linkinbio by @paradiseroadfarm
Our first calf of 2026! His mum is one of my original and favourite cows, simply because she just never causes any drama - ever - (and conveniently has had all 3 of her calves between 3pm and 5.30pm on a week day afternoon). This little fellow was born literally one hour after one of my former farm helpers Nozomi from Japan announced the birth of her daughter this morning! Nozomi raised this calf's cousin when she came to stay in 2023. Nozomi asked me to name the calf after her daughter Waka. The characters for her daughters name are 和　(Wa for peace) and a character that means 'orchid' and reads as Ka- but because its a boy she suggested changing the 'ka' character to 禾　which means 'rice' so apparently his name represents a "Rich harvest"- which is always what we want on a farm! (and which is certainly what he was extracting from Mum) Thank you Nozomi! (and all the best with your baby daughter) #specklepark #cowmama #workingholidayaustralia ＃ワーホリオーストラリア ＃ファームステイ by @paradiseroadfarm
