ORIGENS DA CAPOEIRA — NOVEMBER 20, 2026

From Africa to Brazil.
From oppression to resistance.
From prohibition to liberation.
From the streets to academies around the world.

Origens da Capoeira returns to the stage for a 90-minute theatrical journey through the history, struggle, culture and evolution of Capoeira.

Through theatre, movement, music and Capoeira, we travel back to the roots of the art and follow its journey across generations.

This year’s performance carries an even deeper meaning.

On November 20 — Dia de Zumbi & Dia da Consciência Negra, the story comes full circle as the evening culminates in the Formatura of Mestrando Paraíba to Mestre — the recognition of a lifetime dedicated to Capoeira, teaching, community and the formation of future generations.

A night of history.
A night of culture.
A once-in-a-lifetime moment.

The show is part of our 4-Day Batizado & Formatura Weekend — November 19–22:

THURSDAY — Opening Roda & Bate-Papo
Kick off the weekend with a short opening roda, Q&A with our guests, photos, conversation, light snacks and a chance to connect before the main events begin.

FRIDAY — Origens da Capoeira + Mestre Formatura
Our theatrical journey from Africa to Brazil, followed by the once-in-a-lifetime Formatura of Mestrando Paraíba to Mestre.

SATURDAY — Batizado & Troca de Corda
Our annual belt ceremony, where students are welcomed into Capoeira or recognized for their progression to their next corda.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY — Workshops & Rodas
Special workshops, training sessions and rodas led by invited Mestres and guests throughout the weekend.

Happy Saturday, everyone! 🙌

For those who don’t know us yet, I’d like to introduce you to Casa de Bamba Arts Center, a true Brazilian arts center right here in Toronto.

Casa de Bamba offers classes, event space, and of course, top-quality açaí! 🇧🇷

We’re proud to have a variety of artists and instructors offering classes in Capoeira for adults and children, Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Maracatu, Samba, Forró, Fitness, Ballet, Axé, and much more!

Our space has also hosted all kinds of events, including theatre productions, samba circles, forró nights, tango nights, women’s gatherings, talks, and much more.

But it wasn’t always like this. As you can see in the video, everything here was built with a lot of hard work, sweat, and our own hands. It took years of work to transform this place into what it is today.

That’s why this isn’t just a space... it’s the Casa dos Bambas, the Home of the Bambas! ❤️

Come enjoy some authentic açaí, just like you’d get in Brazil, visit us in person, and see everything Casa de Bamba has to offer.

We are not going to stop this unless we educate our youths better. Men especially need a place to let off steam. They need community to understand how to value each other. To learn how much a life is worth. To learn respect for the elderly, respect for someone who is going through a tough moment in life.

This is 2 more broken families who will live with this for the rest of their lives. Who will possibly live with hatred in their hearts, and may repeat this cycle of hate, revenge etc.

The person responsible for this should not get 20 years in jail. They need to get LIFE. there is no justification for bringing a firearm to a family street festival with thousands of people. This person left his house wanting to do harm.

As a business owner, I can't not think about all the small businesses affected also. Time, effort, money... Lost. Not to mention the trauma and incertenty of whether or not to participate in these types of events in the future.

Ironic how the thing that brings LIFE to our city has just claimed 2.

Educate your kids! Teach them about community. Make them do difficult things. Know who their friends are.

Where do i start.....

Capoeira has been a constant part of my life since i was 12 years old. No breaks, no plan B. From an early age, i knew this was what i wanted for the rest of my life.
There are so many people to thank, so many great moments and some not so great. It all has shaped me into the man i am today.
I've worked hard, and have had the help of MANY people... but have also had luck along the way. Luck for having people around me who pushed me, people who supported me, and even the bad moments that fortified my burning desire to succeed in the thing i love to do the most.

In 2019 I started Team Capoeira Bamba. As such, it meant embarking on a journey where i have no-one to guide and mentor me. I trusted my guts and persisted. My Mestre Barrao taught me to believe in Capoeira, to always put it first. In this new chapter in my life, i met Mestre Pinga-Fogo who i chose to be my Padrinho. I saw in him something that was missing in my life: prioritizing family and friendships.

The nomination to a MESTRE tittle was hard for me to accept and It's been a few years that I hear it from different Mestres. Although i still feel like a child in this art, I established THREE prerequesits before accepting my nomination to Mestre:
1 - 30 Years of Capoeira
2- 40 Years of age
3- my peers who held the same belt would have to graduate first.

And so, the time is finally here. As such, I vow to always hold Capoeira in the highest regard, to honor those who came before me, and to carry its name with humility, integrity, and respect for the rest of my life.

Last night we hosted the first movie night and fundraiser at Casa de Bamba Brazilian Arts Center, our non profit organization.

We played music, sang, ate popcorn, socialized, laughed, told stories and connected with each other.
We were able to gather valuable insights into what our community wants to see more in order to build stronger healthier neighbourhoods.
