THE QUEER SCENE IN BERLIN BEFORE NATIONAL SOCIALISM ✦ Alternative tour in English · Schöneberg · 2 hours

In the 1920s, Berlin was the queer capital of the world. Over 170 queer spaces in a ten-block radius. Lesbian clubs, drag cabarets, the world’s first gender-affirming surgeries, all happening here, in this neighbourhood, on these streets.

A life that seemed unstoppable. Until it wasn’t.

This Saturday we walk Schöneberg to recover the stories that Na*zism tried to erase: Lotte Hahm and her 400-member lesbian resistance network, Dora Richter and the first documented vaginoplasty in history, Claire Waldoff singing on stage in a suit and tie. The places are still here. Most of them look like nothing today, a supermarket, a courtyard, a pharmacy window. We know what happened inside.

No prior knowledge needed. Just curiosity and comfortable shoes.

CUIR PRIDE: QUEER HISTORY TOUR RECAP 🚶‍♀️

As part of our CUIR PRIDE side event program, we were happy to partner with Parallel Berlin (@parallelbln) for a special Spanish-language walking tour through Schöneberg, exploring Berlin’s queer history before National Socialism.

During the tour, we traced the stories of a city that, during the 1920s, became one of the world’s most vibrant queer capitals. From pioneering movements for sexual emancipation to the lives, spaces, and communities that shaped queer Berlin before they were violently erased, the tour invited us to remember how history continues to resonate in the streets we walk today.
