Join us for a special cultural exchange weekend celebrating the richness, resilience, and living traditions of Filipino heritage through the knowledge and artistry of our culture bearers.

We are honored to welcome Ate Jenny Bawer Young, a master Kalinga weaver and cultural practitioner whose life’s work is rooted in the traditions passed down by her parents and grandparents in the Cordillera region of the Philippines. From laga (traditional backstrap weaving) to music, chants, and dances, Jenny carries forward the ancestral knowledge and artistic practices that have sustained Kalinga identity across generations.

Since moving to California in 2006, Jenny has become a vital resource for the Filipino American community, sharing her knowledge through cultural performances, workshops, and her leadership with Kalingafornia Laga, a women’s collective committed to preserving and promoting Kalinga weaving and cultural traditions in the Bay Area. Her work reminds us that cultural heritage is not simply something we inherit—it is something we practice, nurture, share, and pass on.

This Filipino American History Month, come together with us to learn from our culture bearers, deepen our understanding of Indigenous Filipino traditions, and celebrate the stories, artistry, and ancestral wisdom that connect us across generations and across oceans.

Let’s honor the hands that weave, the voices that sing, the bodies that dance, and the knowledge keepers who keep our cultures alive.

Registration for the dance workshops are still open. Link in bio.

That is a wrap for Balik Bayou 2026! Heart full and we’re grateful that we got to experience it with all of you. Thank you Parangal for Balik Bayou! Throughout this Balik Bayou, kept thinking about the Filipinos who came to Louisiana long before us - the migrants, workers, families, and communities who carried memories, traditions, languages, faith, music, and stories across the ocean. They may not have arrived with much, but they brought pieces of home with them. Over time, those pieces took root in Louisiana: in families, neighborhoods, churches, kitchens, celebrations, and relationships that helped Filipino life endure and grow.

Coming to Louisiana gave us the chance not only to learn about history, but to feel connected to it - to recognize that we were not arriving as strangers, but as descendants, inheritors, and participants in a story that began long before us.

And maybe, without fully realizing it, we were also helping create what comes next.

Hope is that we didn’t simply come to Louisiana, perform, and leave. We hope we strengthened something here - opened doors, built relationships, sparked curiosity, and helped create more space for Filipino culture to continue flowing through Louisiana - not just during Balik Bayou, but for many years to come.

The people who came before us carried Filipino culture across distance and uncertainty so that something of home could survive in a new place. We now have the responsibility and privilege to carry it forward. What we shared becomes part of that continuity: one more link between the generations who came before us, the communities here today, and those who will come after us.

We came here following the footsteps of those who came before us. Now, in some small way, we’ve left footsteps of our own - not as an ending, but as an invitation for others to continue the journey.
Maraming salamat po Ate @jessicamelendezbayuga and PAWAL, Ate @coachingkapwa and @bayoubarkada, Faisal Monal @paramatabantugen for all teachings and Ipat A Kadsakay journey, @nefa_1976 for opportunity to tour and to all that showed up and showed out to make Balik Bayou possible.Balik Bayou soon, our ancestors call!
