This semester, the platform will be first activated by the minor Alternative Futures: Sustainability and Ecology in Practice in an exhibition on the 6th of March from 13:30 until 17:30 in Toni-Areal, Kunstraum 5.K12! A second activation will take place in the course Fugitive Scenographies / Curatorial Conspiracies featuring an exhibition on the 21st of May. OPEN CALL How can a university become a space for works that might otherwise remain unseen—because of a lack of space, resources or visibility? Paratopia is an unfixed, mobile curatorial platform that moves through ZHdK, turning existing spaces into temporary sites of exhibition, encounter and collaboration. SAVE THE DATE Thursday, 21 May 2026 Start at 17:30 in ZHdK, Toni-Areal, Main Hall Moving at 18:00 to ZHdK, Toni-Areal, 7th Floor Konzertfoyer Innen & Aussen The mobile exhibition/parade “a pigeon is a horse in a thistle forest” gathers works that probe and unsettle the architectures they inhabit, tracing hidden violences, encoded histories, and shifting regimes of control. Exploring murmuration and “conspiracy” (from the latin conspirare), “pigeoning” emerges as a speculative strategy of mimicry, misdirection, and subtle subversion. Attuned to cracks and gaps the exhibition invites viewers to sense what usually escapes notice, searching for the institution’s fractures, where what is hidden can begin to surface. How can we breathe collectively, and act in secretive coordination in a time in which attempts of dissidence are being suffocated? As part of the transdisciplinary ZHdK minor Alternative Futures: Sustainability and Ecology in Practice, designed and directed by Professors Karin Zindel (@karinzindel ) and Nuria Krämer, the Paratopia mobile exhibition space marked its first activation with Mapping Safiental. Mapping Safiental takes the form of a 3D digital map and exhibition exploring ancestral knowledge alongside old and emerging practices. Rooted in an exploration of the Safiental valley in Graubünden, Switzerland, it approaches the landscape as a living archive where past, present, and future intertwine. What might an alternative future look like if time were understood as a spiral—where inherited knowledge is reactivated through contemporary practices? How can the region’s materiality be approached as a living entity, opening pathways toward such futures? From a week of encounters and conversations in Safiental, three material strands emerge: affective apotropaic matter, fermented matter, and repurposed matter. Through the Paratopia mobile curatorial platform, these materials come together in a tactile, sensory experience—engaging fermented food practices, wool, masks, bones, and more.
