Sometimes the people who look the most “put together” are carrying the most internally. As a Licensed k-12 school counselor who thought I knew a lot about social emotional well being and working with children, undergoing the process of parent coaching humbled me real quick.
If you are ready to level up as a parent by learning more about yourself first, then let’s start the journey together. DM me to learn about my 12 week coaching program.#parentingwithmadina #consciousparenting #heal #mentalhealth by @parentingwithmadina

💛 UPDATE: I’ve created a FREE Friendship Radar Guide for parents who want to better understand these subtle friendship challenges.

Comment RADAR below to receive your copy!

✨ My expanded Friendship Radar Toolkit, with practical strategies and tools, is coming soon. #A lot of moms miss this.

Because it doesn’t look like bullying.

It sounds like:
“You can’t sit with us.”
“You have to do what I say.”
“I won’t be your friend if you don’t…”

And we tell our daughters:
“Just ignore it.”
“Be nice.”
“Don’t make a big deal.”

But here’s the problem…

When girls learn to tolerate this to keep a friendship,
they don’t just lose the moment—
they start losing their voice.

And that pattern doesn’t stay in elementary school.

It follows them into friendships, relationships, and how they see themselves.

Your daughter doesn’t need to be tougher.
She needs to know:

✔ I can speak up
✔ I can set a boundary
✔ I can walk away and still be okay

You can be kind… and still have boundaries.

Follow @parentingwithmadina for more tools to raise confident, emotionally strong kids 💛

🎂Want a fun, inexpensive way to make your child feel extra special on their birthday? Try this sweet birthday scavenger hunt! 🎁

I created this for my daughter’s 9th birthday, and it was such a meaningful way to celebrate her.

Here’s how to recreate it:

🎁 Step 1: Pick out one small, inexpensive gift for every year of your child’s age. Turning 9? Choose 9 little surprises!

💌 Step 2: Create an envelope for each gift with a clue leading to where it’s hidden.

📸 Step 3: Inside each envelope, include a photo of your child from that age, along with a favorite memory or something you’ve always loved about them.

🔎 Step 4: Hide the gifts around your home and let the birthday scavenger hunt begin!

❤️ Step 5: End with a heartfelt birthday card reminding them just how loved they are.

It’s not about how much you spend. It’s about creating moments that make your child feel seen, celebrated, and loved.

And the best part? You can make this a birthday tradition they’ll look forward to year after year.

💕 Save this idea for your child’s next birthday, and share it with another parent who would love it! by @parentingwithmadina

For generations, girls have been taught to be nice, keep the peace, and let things go.

But kindness should never come at the expense of self-respect.

When we teach our daughters to recognize unhealthy friendship patterns, speak up for themselves, and set boundaries, we’re giving them skills they’ll carry into adulthood.

Because raising kind girls shouldn’t mean raising girls who feel responsible for keeping everyone else happy. ❤️

💬 Comment RADAR and I’ll send you my FREE Friendship Radar guide to help you recognize friendship behaviors every parent should understand.

After years of working as a school counselor, there are three friendship dynamics I wish every parent understood.

Triangulation. Relational aggression. And emotional dismissal.

These may not be familiar terms, but they’re behaviors that can show up in our daughters’ friendships and quietly affect their confidence and self-esteem.

That’s why I created my FREE Friendship Radar guide — to help parents recognize the subtle friendship patterns that often go unnoticed.

Some of the most damaging friendships are the ones our daughters don’t even realize are unhealthy. 🚩

As parents, we often teach our children to recognize bullying. But what about the friend who makes them feel guilty for having other friends? The one who shares secrets to create drama? Or the one who dismisses their feelings and calls them “too sensitive”?

These behaviors can be subtle, especially when they’re coming from someone your daughter considers her best friend.

And here’s what I want parents to understand:

Our job isn’t to choose our daughters’ friends. It’s to help them develop the awareness, confidence, and judgment to recognize healthy relationships for themselves.

Before middle school, our daughters need more than warnings about mean girls. They need the language to recognize manipulation, understand boundaries, and trust their own feelings.

💛 That’s why I created my FREE Friendship Radar Guide—to help parents recognize these patterns and start approaching friendship concerns more thoughtfully.

As a mom of two teenage boys, a former school counselor, and a parent coach, I believe this is a conversation every parent needs to be having.

AI isn’t going away, and it can be incredibly useful. But we need to be intentional about protecting real human connection.

Some parts of our upbringing are worth carrying forward. Others are worth looking at a little more closely.

We can love our culture, honor where we come from, and still be intentional about what we pass down to the next generation. ❤️

If this resonated with you, share it with someone who grew up hearing “sharm,” like this post, and follow @parentingwithmadina for more conversations on parenting, culture, and breaking generational patterns. #parentingwithmadina #consciousparenting #afghan #afghanistan #shame by @parentingwithmadina

If getting your kids out the door every morning feels like one long string of:

“Get dressed.”
“Brush your teeth.”
“Where are your shoes?”
“We’re going to be late!”

Try adding a little playfulness instead.

Race them downstairs. Put on a song and see if they can get dressed before it ends. See who can get their shoes on first. Let the winner pick the music in the car.

It sounds simple, but making it a game can turn a power struggle into connection and cooperation.

You don’t have to make everything fun. But sometimes, when repeating yourself isn’t working, changing the energy works better than getting louder.

Save this for Monday morning and follow @parentingwithmadina for more!

Sometimes what looks like “not listening” isn’t defiance at all.

Kids—especially younger ones—are still developing the executive functioning skills that help them shift attention, transition away from something they’re focused on, hold directions in their working memory, and control impulses.

So when your child doesn’t respond right away, try not to immediately tell yourself: They’re ignoring me. They don’t respect me. They don’t care.

Sometimes their brain just needs a little help switching gears.

And when we understand what’s happening underneath the behavior, we can respond with more intention—and a lot less frustration. 🤍

Save this for the next time you’re about to ask for the fifth time—and share it with a parent who needs it too.

Love the fact that @doctorshefali created a separate book for raising sons and daughters. They often grow up receiving very different messages about who they’re supposed to be. Girls may learn to be agreeable, pleasing, or appearance-conscious, while boys may learn to suppress vulnerability, toughen up, or equate worth with achievement.

How much of that do we unknowingly reinforce as parents?

That’s a conversation I’m really interested in—and one that feels incredibly relevant to the work I do with families.

Thank you, @drshefali, for the advance copies. 🤍 I’m looking forward to diving in and sharing what I learn.

Will be out September 15th. 📖 by @parentingwithmadina

Sometimes conscious parenting looks like knowing when to be quiet on the sidelines. ❤️

Not every mistake needs our commentary. Not every disappointing moment needs a lesson.

Sometimes we just let them play—and let the experience teach them. #parentingwithmadina #soccermom #coach by @parentingwithmadina
