In today’s fast paced world there’s increasing expectations and demand for quick results. Too often we give up or change course before we’ve given ourselves sufficient time to achieve our initial objectives.

Meaningful objectives are rarely achieved quickly. Remember, what we see on social media is the end product, which was only possible after an investment of substantial time and effort.

Continued… No one wanted to be in a Manhattan high-rise, especially one on the same block as the busy Grand Central Station, so everyone gathered their stuff and headed for the ground floor. Once on the ground people started filling the streets looking south towards the WTC where smoke was bellowing up into the air. As the trains had stopped running, there wasn’t any way to easily get off the island of Manhattan, back to New Jersey. People starting crossing on foot the bridges to Queens and Brooklyn.

Communications were spotty to say the least. Everyone was on high alert as we had no idea if another plane might hit a 3rd building or target. At one point I briefly made contact with my wife who was letting me know that she was watching CNN and people were jumping out of windows at the WTC to escape the flames and building collapsing. My extended family, who only knew I worked in Manhattan were calling from the Florida, the UK and Jamaica but could get through on the phone lines to learn if I was ok.

Not knowing how or when I might get back home I started walking towards the Westside towards the Hudson River where someone had said there were ferry boats bound for NJ. I made a quick stop at a Subways, got a sub and some water to tide me over. By the time I got to the Hudson River near Chelsea Piers, there was a line a mile long of people also similarly trying to get off Manhattan and back to New Jersey. I spent several hours walking the streets awaiting word as to when Penn Station trains would start running again. It wasn’t until late afternoon that the trains start running and I finally made it home after a surreal and serene train ride.

In the days and weeks in the aftermath of the attacks, NYC was a different place. There were photos left by their loved ones all-around the city of missing people who presumably had perished in the attacks. I remember the feeling of overwhelming unity New Yorkers displayed to one another. We had been attacked and there was no room for division. Unfortunately that didn’t last long enough, but few things do.

The key to #opportunity is being prepared.

Without the proper preparation you’ll not recognize opportunity when it knocks.

There’s an apt quote which states, ‘luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity!’ - Seneca.

Even when prepared, if you lack the conviction to seize the opportunity, it will pass you by and knock on someone else’s door.

Opportunity is usually an infrequent and unpredictable guest, so don’t try to control the timing of its arrival.

Be ready to entertain it whenever it arrives.
