There is an immense amount of talent and spirit behind the new Shinto shrine that was dedicated last week in the Japanese Garden at Point Defiance Park.

It was built in Tacoma’s sister city Kitakyushu in Japan by Mr. Kondo, a master carpenter. Mr. Kondo traveled to Tacoma in September 2024 – his first time leaving his own country – to inspect the old Shinto shrine. The red shrine was rotting and weathered. He measured, inspected, and proposed building a new shrine and refurbishing the original.

In Japan, Shinto is a faith built around kami spirits believed to inhabit natural features and sacred objects. Shrines are built to house the deities and people visit them to pray for good fortune or seek blessings.

By the end of his trip to Tacoma, Kondo knew what he wanted to do.

With more than 40 years of experience at his family’s shrine building business while also teaching woodworking at a high school, Kondo seemed the perfect solution to keeping a Shinto shrine at Point Defiance.

His students in Japan helped draw blueprints of the design. Then he spent six months carving the new shrine before it was shipped to Tacoma.

It will be on display for about two weeks and then brought inside for the winter to protect it from inclement weather.

Thank you to @tacomaparksfoundation and the @sister_cities_tacoma for helping make this possible. by @parkstacoma

Before Jimothy, there was Jawless Jerry 🐺

If you were around Tacoma in 2023 you might remember the coyote with the unmistakable face who started popping up in neighborhoods (and parks!) around the city and quickly became something of a Tacoma legend.

Despite the name, Jerry was actually a she. Missing much of her upper snout, she somehow kept roaming, eating and surviving for months while Tacomans followed her sightings online, made art in her honor and adopted her as an unofficial Grit City crpytid. Jerry’s run came to an end in early 2024 but her place in Tacoma lore lives on.

So, Tacoma: did you ever cross paths with Jawless Jerry? Maybe in one of our parks, your neighborhood or somewhere else around the city? We want to hear your Jerry stories 👇 taken in Tacoma, Washington by @parkstacoma

Some of Wright Park's history is written in the trees.

🌳 Red Oak, planted in 1903 to commemorate President Theodore Roosevelt's visit to Tacoma. This tree has now stood in Wright Park for more than 120 years.

🌿 Gray Birch, planted in 1929 and dedicated in honor of Tacoma mothers.

🌲 Giant Sequoia, planted in 1939 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the adoption of the U.S. Constitution.

And these are just a three of the stories rooted throughout Wright Park. The park's arboretum dates back to the late 1800s, when hundreds of ornamental trees were planted as part of the vision for the new public park. Today, that collection includes mature trees from around the world, including some of the largest examples of their species in Washington. by @parkstacoma

Outside STAR Center lies a wetland park with walking trails and a bridge to encourage people to stroll through the landscape.

Just beyond the bridge stands a three-part sculpture called “SEMPERVIVUM”. Lisa Kinoshita, the artist, designed the sculpture as a tribute to the early 20th-century wetlands that once flourished throughout the South Tacoma area.

Nelly Furtado said “I’m like a bird,” and Park Guide Alex said, “Okay, but can you identify which one?” ☝️🤓

We’ve been learning from Alex about the birds that live, migrate (and generally mind their business) around Tacoma and the Puget Sound. Once you start noticing them, you really do start seeing birds everywhere.

And heads up, our next Coffee With The Birds is at Titlow Park on November 1st. This event will feature education about geese (not the band, silly!), with a guided walk through the park.

And if November 1 feels too far away, there are more bird walks and birding opportunities happening throughout October at Wapato, Titlow and Point Defiance. View a list of upcoming birding activities at the link in our bio! taken in Tacoma, Washington by @parkstacoma
