The immune system has a brake pedal. Three scientists just won the Nobel Prize for finding it.

Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering regulatory T cells — the cells that keep the immune system from attacking the body’s own tissue. The gene that controls them is called FOXP3. When FOXP3 mutates, the brakes fail — and that failure is what drives conditions like Type 1 diabetes, MS, and rheumatoid arthritis. 

There are now over 200 clinical trials running on therapies built from this research. The promise isn’t just better treatment — it’s precision. She spent months in a lab purifying 22 milligrams of a radioactive isotope so that a team of international scientists could attempt to create something that had never existed before.

Clarice Phelps — nuclear chemist, Navy veteran, and the first Black woman involved in the discovery of a new element — helped make Tennessine, element 117, possible. Her three months of precision purification work at #OakRidgeNationalLaboratory produced the berkelium-249 that was shipped to Russia, fused with calcium-48, and briefly became the second-heaviest element ever created. It exists for less than a second before decaying. The work it took to produce it lasted years.

What Phelps talks about most isn’t the chemistry. It’s who gets to see themselves doing it. For the first 18 years of her career, she was the only Black woman in her field. She knows what that absence costs — and she knows what her visibility can change for the girls watching now.

The current gold standard for autism diagnosis — the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule — requires rare specialist expertise, resists standardization across clinical settings, and is grounded almost entirely in subjective clinical observation. For a condition affecting 1 in 31 children in the U.S., that creates a structural bottleneck with real developmental consequences.

@blinklab.app's Dx1 changes the inputs. During a 15-minute smartphone session, a child watches age-appropriate video while the platform's AI reads facial reflexes, eye and eyelid movements, acoustic startle responses, postural stability, and vocal patterns — capturing objective, reflex-based neurometric biomarkers without a specialist in the room. In a peer-reviewed multi-center study of 536 children published in Autism Research this January, the approach reliably detected distinct sensorimotor profiles associated with autism across age, gender, and clinically diverse populations. In a separate real-world U.S. pilot study of 485 children — intentionally designed to reflect the full spectrum of developmental presentations seen in clinical practice — Dx1 hit 83.7% sensitivity and 84.7% specificity. Both figures clear the FDA's own minimum threshold for clearance by nearly 20 points.

The FDA trial is now live across 10 major U.S. hospitals. Morocco already launched a government-mandated national program built around Dx1, targeting approximately 600,000 children born annually. That's a sovereign government deploying a smartphone-based AI diagnostic tool at population scale — before FDA clearance.

The science is moving faster than the system. The question is how quickly access follows.

Scientists just built a real-life T-1000 — and it works exactly like you'd expect.

Researchers from @snu.official (Seoul National University) and Gachon University published a new soft robot in Science Advances that squeezes through narrow gaps, reforms its shape on the other side, and can capture and carry foreign materials through its environment. The system uses a liquid core encased in hydrophobic particles that give it structural stability without sacrificing the fluidity underneath. Guide it with ultrasound, and it moves with precision while still adapting to complex spaces.

The researchers are already exploring biomedical applications — including targeted drug delivery and treatment pathways inside the human body.

This is the direction surgical robotics, search-and-rescue tech, and minimally invasive medicine are heading: systems that behave more like biology than machinery.

Around 80% of kids getting an MRI had to be sedated first. Not because it hurt — because the room terrified them.

VR for pain management is neuroscience. Immersive sensory input measurably reduces pain perception, and emergency departments are using headsets during procedures without additional medication.

XStat was built for battlefield trauma and FDA-cleared for civilian use in 2015. Expanding hemostatic sponges injected into a wound cavity stop an arterial bleed in about 20 seconds.
