ALTADENA, Calif. — A life of faith, service and community leadership will be celebrated this fall as longtime Altadena pastor and faith leader Bishop Dr. Dennis B. Evans, Jr. marks his 96th birthday.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Bishop Evans co-founded Refuge Christian Center with his late wife, Pastor Dorothy A. Their ministry extended beyond Southern California through missionary work in Australia, the Bahamas, and other parts of the world, touching people across cultures and backgrounds. Their work also emphasized cross-cultural understanding and counseling throughout their years of service.

As Refuge Christian Center COGIC approaches its 50th anniversary in January 2027, the congregation will honor the enduring legacy of Bishop and Dr. Mother Evans.

EATON FIRE SURVIVORS BRING THEIR STORIES TO LIFE IN FROM ASHES WE GATHER
Eaton Fire Survivors Bring Their Stories to Life in From Ashes We Gather-October 22, 2026
Extreme Weather Survivors: Stolen Summers presents From Ashes We Gather, a theatrical production created from the lived experiences of Eaton Fire survivors. The performance explores the human cost of extreme weather, examining what communities lose as summers grow hotter, wildfire seasons become longer, and disasters increasingly disrupt lives.
The production features Rasheed Ali, Daniel Moises, Elisa Nixon, and Julia Grob — actors who are themselves fire survivors. Bringing their personal experiences to the stage, these performers give voice to the stories of their neighbors and the ongoing challenges of displacement, loss, and recovery.

Developed through a collaboration among Altadena Photographers, Cornerstone Theatre, and Home Microphone, From Ashes We Gather draws upon photographs by Gayle Nicholls-Ali and more than 14 hours of interviews with Eaton Fire survivors. These firsthand accounts have been shaped into a collective theatrical narrative that honors community memory and examines the lasting human consequences of the Eaton Fire.

The performance carries particular authenticity because the actors are not simply portraying survivors — they are survivors themselves, sharing experiences that connect their own lives with the stories of their community.

A Community-Centered Pre-Show Celebration
The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a pre-show reception featuring food, beverages, art, and interactive community experiences. Participating artists and organizations include Austin Scott, artist and muralist; Rhythms of the Village; artists from the Arts & Culture Coalition of Altadena (ACCA); and Cornerstone Theatre.

The pre-show gathering invites audiences to connect with artists, neighbors, and fellow survivors before the theatrical performance. Through visual art, cultural expression, and community engagement, the reception celebrates Altadena's creative spirit and the vital role artists play in rebuilding and healing their community.

The theatrical performance begins at 7:30 p.m. by @pasadenablackpages

ALTADENA PHOTOGRAPHERS TO HOST 2ND DENA ZINE RETREAT
Since the fire has scattered our community, I am reminded of how much it matters to have somewhere to gather. Somewhere to make something with our hands, share a meal, reconnect with a neighbor, and take a breath.

As we continue navigating life after the Eaton Fire, these moments deserve a place alongside the appointments, paperwork, and decisions that fill our days. Creating space for connection is part of Altadena Photographers’ commitment to creative wellness and recovery.

PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN PASADENA CITY COLLEGE AND UCLA IS PAYING DIVIDENDS FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO HOPE TO TRANSFER
PASADENA—Pasadena City College and the UCLA Center for Community College Partnerships are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of an innovative collaboration that has helped more than a thousand community college students transfer and earn a university degree.

At a gathering held Wednesday on the campus of PCC, students, faculty, staff, and elected officials reflected on the program’s success in creating a smooth pathway from community college to four-year universities and colleges.

“So today isn't just a celebration of 10 years; it's a celebration of every student who walked this journey and got the support they needed to reach their academic and professional goals,” said José A. Gómez, president of PCC, speaking to about 150 students, faculty, and staff gathered in Westerbeck Recital Hall.
