As a Black man with sigmatism, I often want to express myself through speech, but sometimes it can be difficult. What’s interesting is that there are times when I can give an excellent speech. When I say excellent, I mean it. Other times, though, I struggle to pronounce certain words, not because I don’t know them, but simply because I can’t produce the sounds easily.

I was bullied for this as a child, and even as an adult I’ve had people make assumptions about me because of it. I remember being at school once when a woman mocked the way I spoke and laughed. She seemed to think my sigmatism meant I was unintelligent. Later, we both gave anatomy presentations and took the exam. I earned an A, while she failed.

Experiences like that taught me that a speech difference has nothing to do with intelligence.

I’m still learning more about why I have sigmatism, and if anyone is interested in learning about it, I’d be happy to share what I’ve discovered. taken in Linköping, Sweden by @pascal_gomez14

I asked the seller in the shop, ‘How are you?’ I tried to talk gently to myself today and to the people around me. I ate something sour and had coffee by myself. taken in Linköping, Sweden by @pascal_gomez14

Recently I decided to get into the health field. Swedish isn’t my mother tongue but I closed my eyes and just did it. Some days were rough but today I’m here. I earned As in the Swedish grading system. The journey still continues. taken in Linköping, Sweden by @pascal_gomez14

Last year, I went to Spain for vacation, and funnily enough, someone tried to steal my phone 😂. I was quick enough to get it back! But as soon as I got home to Sweden, the phone fell in the bathroom and couldn’t be fixed. Guess it was really meant to be gone 😂 Anyway, I got my new iPhone 16 Pro Max! taken in Linköping, Sweden by @pascal_gomez14
