POSTS STORIES REELS

“El Tecolote” is the longest-running Spanish-English newspaper in California.

Originally a student-run paper at San Francisco State University, “El Tecolote” has documented the political, cultural, and artistic life of the city’s Mission District since 1970.

Today, it is published by Acción Latina (@accionlatinasf), an organization that also stewards an archive of more than 50 years of stories about the life of the community.

Rather than treating history as frozen in time, Acción Latina reanimates the newspaper’s archives through Paseo Artístico, a bilingual walking tour through the Mission District.

These walking tours revive history as documented by the paper through live performances, murals, and installations.

“We have to remind people to value this history,” says Paul Flores, Paseo Artístico producer at Acción Latina. “To reimagine. To inspire. To say, ‘this happened, and we need to learn from this.’”

Acción Latina is one of the community-based archives to be awarded a Mellon grant through its 2025 Open Call for Proposals.

PASEO ARTÍSTICO CULMINATES 10 YEARS IN CALLE 24 LATINO CULTURAL DISTRICT WITH OCTOBER 10th BLOCK PARTY!

Ten years ago, in 2016, Acción Latina and cultural community partners on 24th Street launched Paseo Artístico, the first family-friendly, bilingual community artwalk in the Mission District of San Francisco. With the intention to celebrate and promote the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District (formally recognized in 2014), Paseo Artístico became a major cultural activity in the Mission, uniting businesses, cultural arts venues, artists, families and community members, while building a powerful platform for Latinx artists development. In the past 10 years Paseo Artístico has presented over 2000 artists at 53 unique quarterly events. This October 10th Paseo Artístico will feature a Block Party on Harrison and 24th street with a live stage, a dozen cultural venues, multiple vendors, a dynamic line up of musical artists, DJs, painters, crafts, kids activities, community murals, dance performance, and poets who have performed at Paseo Artístico over the last 10 years. Confirmed artists include Inti Mystica, Agua Pura, Fogo Na Roupa, Sin Frontera Dreams, DJ Quest, Liliana Herrera, Mission District Young Musicians Program, Sew Frisco, and more! The event is free for entire family.
Check www.paseoartistico for updated lineup and schedule.

Paseo Artistico is co-presented with Accion Latina by 24th Street cultural venues including Brava Theater, Dance Mission, Precita Eyes Muralists, Community Music Center, Medicine For Nightmares Bookstore & Gallery, Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, Made in The City, Evolved SF, Artillery AG Ceramics, Horizons Unlimited and Mission Cultural Center.

Paseo Artístico has generously been funded by Latino Community Foundation PoderArte Grant, the Mellon Foundation and generous donors.

THANK YOU ❤️

10 years of Paseo Artístico! 10 years of love, art, collaboration, and community in the Mission District.

What a beautiful day celebrating a decade of bringing people together through art and culture on Calle 24! Thank you to every artist, performer, vendor, volunteer, and community member who made this celebration possible.

AND WE HAVE SOME BIG NEWS!

We thought this would be our final Paseo Artístico, but after hearing from our community and seeing how much this program means to everyone, we’ve decided to keep it going for ONE MORE YEAR!

At a time when our neighborhood continues to change, keeping spaces for art, culture, and community alive matters more than ever.

10 YEARS DOWN, ONE MORE TO GO! ❤️

Clothes on Fire: The Carlos Aceituno Story is TODAY at 3pm at Dance Mission Theater! Brought to you thanks to a dope collaboration between @gofogonaroupa , @accionlatinasf , @p.flo_sf , and Dance Mission!

This work in progress showing is FREE but advance reservations are sold out. Come early to see if tickets are released. And, if you have a reservation, don’t forget that you must check in by 2:45pm or else your reservation is subject to being released to someone on the wait list.

Because of the WIP showing, Fogo’s drum and dance classes at 12pm and 1pm respectively are canceled today at DMT (all other adult classes are ON).

And then after the show, we are all heading down to the @paseoartistico Block Party, as Fogo is performing at 5:30pm at 24/Harrison. Or come to the party earlier : Dance Mission will be there all day starting at 11am tabling and checking out the other fantastic performances. Come say hi!!! It has been amazing to be a partner on Paseo Artistico for the past ten years, and this will be the last Paseo event 😭… at least for a while! by @paseoartistico
