I have found myself thinking of hobbits. Their way of life is mesmerizing to me. It is defined by the patterns of the seasons and the meals that they eat. Their hopes and joys are wholesome, and their struggles are small because the scope of their lives is small. Sure, there was a Dark Lord preparing to overthrow all Middle Earth and kill everyone, but the hobbits were able to live their jolly lives as if none of that affected them. And you know what? In the end of the story it never did. Most of the hobbits didn’t even know the war ever happened. However, there were Pippin, Merry, Sam, and Frodo. Frodo, and to a lesser extent Sam, were chosen for the mission and did not really have the option of turning back. They were given the burden and it was theirs to bear. Life is like that for some.
But Merry and Pippin had to choose to leave their home and fight. In the Two Towers Pippin says to Merry that, “it’s too big for us. What can we do in the end?” He thinks that perhaps they should leave this all behind and go back to the Shire. It would be so much easier to live the comfortable life of the other hobbits. In a moment of clarity Merry replies, “there won’t be a Shire.” Without the fight, places of beauty and rest will all be destroyed. When the Ents say “we must weather this thing as we have always done,” choosing to remain passive and separate rather than fight, Merry responds, “but you are part of this world! Aren’t you?” Maybe the circumstances of today are not as intense as those of Middle Earth. Maybe it doesn’t seem like the actions of an individual are a matter of life and death. Maybe they aren’t. But in some ways they can be. Perhaps the Ents could have stayed in the forest. Perhaps evil could have been defeated without the help of Merry and Pippin, but I don’t think they regretted having stood up for the side of life. by @pashagoz
