When the sunset follows the tide out, you can walk on an inch of water into the sunset.

On Sunday August 30, the low tide and sunset align over the Brewster flats. You can walk out over a mile in some places on just an inch of water into the most stunning sunset on the Cape.

⚠️ Make sure you check the tide charts and do not stay out on the flats past dark or more than 30 min after low tide. Do not go if it’s cloudy or foggy. And always keep the shore in sight. The flat beach means the tide rushes back in unbelievably fast.

You just have to find it!

⚠️ Read before you visit ⚠️

Use extreme caution walking out on the flats. Go only when the tide is going out because it rushes back very quickly and you might be swimming back.

I shouldn’t have to tell you not to drink sea water but especially don’t drink purple tide.

The various colors are caused by different varieties of algae, seaweed, shells, and minerals. Some could be harmful to humans and pets.

Where can this be found? In the tidal pools across the Brewster Flats. You can walk along the flat, anywhere between Mayflower Beach and Skaket Beach, when the tide is all the way out.

The video of the tide pool taken from the ground was a short walk away from Mayflower Beach along the flats.

Make sure you do not lose sight of the shore and you head back before the tide comes in.

How to find the purple sand ⬇️

The conditions must be just right. Purple seaweed, purple algae, and mussel shells found in warm shallow water on the Brewster Flats color the sand various shades of purple.

The purple algae and seaweed thrive in the warm water in the tide pools on the flats at low tide in August, when water is the warmest.

The colors can best be seen in full sun in the late morning to early afternoon.

Check the tides in August and head to the flats at low tide and walk out to the tidal pools to find it.

I’ve had the best luck seeing it at Paine’s Creek and Mayflower Beach.

What is this?

When the sunset falls just before the extreme low tides on the Brewster Flats, you can walk on a “mirror” of one inch water into the sunset.

⚠️ Never let the shore out of sight
⚠️ Go BEFORE the sun sets. Do not stay out at sea past sunset, it gets dark fast
⚠️ Walk back to shore before the tide starts coming back in, the tide rushes in fast
⚠️ Do not go on a foggy day
⚠️ Stay close to shore. The flats go out up to 2 miles, and you do not want to be caught out at sea in the dark
