Nakasendô trail between Nakatsugawa and Nagiso via Magome and Tsugamo - 10/11/25
The Nakasendo, literally the central mountain route, was a mountainous inland route that once connected Edo (present-day Tokyo) with Kyoto during the Edo period (1603-1868).
The track between Magome-juku in Gifu Prefecture and Tsumago-juku in Nagano Prefecture (about 7,5 km) is well preserved with some cobblestone sections in very good state.
One can start the hike 3,5 kms ahead of Magome (in between Nakatsugawa and Magome) and walk past Tsumago to the Nagiso railway station (anorher 4 kms) so 15 kms in total (return to Nakatsugawa by train)
In the Magome-juku town: old streets with stone-paved paths and traditional wooden houses with lattice windows, a water wheel and at the edge of town is a Kousatsuba (notice board). The later was used by the Tokugawa Shogunate to post notices about laws and policies to the local residents.
In between Magome and Tsumago, one can rest at the Ichikokutochi Tatebachaya Tea House. The traditional building dates from the mid-Edo period, where it also acted as a tea house for travelers on the Nakasendo. In October, one can enjoy some grilled chestnuts.
Tsumago-juku with its original or fully restored lattice wooden houses and ryokan inns is one of the best-preserved post towns in Japan and testifies to the time of the samurai.
As a tradition of ancient time when the imperial family used to travel along the Nakensendo route, delicious food is sold by various inns such as oyaki. Oyaki are steamed buns with various fillings. They are traditionally made with buckwheat flour. Buckwheat is more suited to the mountainous terrain of the Nakasendo than rice is. And so, as an alternative source of sustenance, the local people ground buckwheat into flour and made it into oyaki. Popular fillings include nozawana (leafy local veg), eggplant, pumpkin, mushroom and anko (sweet red beans). I had oyaki for lunch in Tsumago.

Shirakawa -10/09/2025
This village in the Gifu region is the site of Shirakawa-gō, a small, traditional village showcasing a building style known as gasshō-zukuri.
Visiting the traditional buildings of Shirakawa-go allows you to discover both their specific architecture and the historical daily lives of their inhabitants through a collection of ancient objects.
The traditional thatched farmhouses of Shirakawa-go are built in the gassho or “praying hands” style. The word refers to how the triangular shape of the steeply slanted roofs resembles two hands pressed together in prayer. In a gassho-style house, the gables, or triangular wall portions between the edges of the roof on both ends of the structure, are left exposed to wind and sunlight. This style of architecture developed in response to the area’s distinct environment.
The slant of the roof prevents large amounts of snowfall from accumulating and damaging the house, while the unprotected walls on the gable ends are built at a slight outward angle to keep them as dry as possible when it rains. These walls usually have several large windows to let sunlight and air into the multi-level attic, which was traditionally used for silk farming
