[Happy Black History Month Pt. 3] Artist Statement for the Student Emmy's, 2020: "In the fall of 1985 Iroquios McCree, my uncle, was shot multiple times and killed by the police. Almost 33 years later I interviewed his brother, mother, and cousin. Each person shares their perspective on Iroquios as a person, his death, and their experience with internalized grief. They do not only shed light on the overall effects that police brutality has, especially on black people and their families, but the everlasting trauma that Iroquis’s death caused." [All songs are included in the video are also given credit at the end of the film]

Mackenzie McCree is a photographer and videographer based in South Coast Massachusetts who focuses on representation and queer visibility and joy, in particular Black queer joy. She creates works that provide the representation that she lacked growing up.

Mackenzie is a third generation lesbian; meaning that her grandmother, mother, aunt, (even her paternal parent), various cousins and herself are part of the LGBTQ community! The first official documentary video she made when she was 15 focused on her grandma’s gay bar, Le Place, that she owned for almost 40 years in New Bedford.

She won the Best New Bedford filmmaker award in 2024, Best Experimental Film winner at the 4th annual 2024 LAVA Film Festival, and an Indie Spirit Award at the Mass Indie Film Festival in 2025. She will be studying media production in Boston starting in the fall.

The event BECOMING is during Black Pride Month will showcase Mackenzie’s photography and a selection of her videos from ages 15 to now (22). Also featuring a collaborative video and original paintings by artist Omauri Byron-Edwards from Boston. (<— written by @stonewall_liberation_org ) Flyer made by @makhareina 💞 by @patata810

Cannot express enough of my gratitude for my 2 professors Gabo and Downey back in 2024 for encouraging me to submit to a film festival last April for the first time ever. I never thought pursuing film was a possibility for me but I decided to listen to my own advice (and professors) and pursue what scares me most: filmmaking. As I’ve shared I filmed the Fall of 1985 at 16 for myself and family to share their story, Iroquois’s story. This was my first encounter with grief and it was both generational and traumatic. Each interview was the first time in 33 years they had an open, vulnerable, and difficult conversation about their grief. Because of this, there was an inescapable unraveling of internal conflicts within myself on how this generational trauma affected me as well. Similar to how my family never spoke of their mental health, I never spoke of mine. Similar to how my family used humor as a coping mechanism to endure the Black experience, as the only Black girl growing up it was forthcoming I was the class clown and never took myself seriously (and of course neither did any of my peers). In summary, I had an identity crisis and my video project was put on the back burner for the time being. Fast forward to 17 I had then encountered my 2nd ever experience of grief: the loss of my maternal grandmother who’d helped raised me (can’t believe tomorrow marks the 6th year anniversary of her passing insane). With this newfound understanding of grief, I was then able to piece together my 7 hours of interviews and racially biased news paper clippings into what is now my 30 minute short. Thank you to the Massachusetts Independent Film Festival/Shawna foundation for giving my family’s story, my story a platform and an award. It truly feels surreal thank you thank you thank you!!! Check out the Fall of 1985 either on my YouTube (link in bio) or it’s pinned on this instagram page by @patata810

On a random summer's day, I follow around my Aunt Tami as she goes about her day to day life completing random side quests and working on her ice cream truck. In this comedic 30 minute episode, you see how someone as eccentric as Aunt Tami navigates her days as a self employed lady.

"Painting with Omauri" is a quick/last minute video I created yesterday for a recent assignment involving the usage of 3 different types of lighting: over head lighting, natural lighting, and LED lights. Within this video Omauri explains his journey as an artist, specifically as a painter and sketch drawing, and how he reached the skillset he's achieved. I wanna lastly thank Omauri for being such an engaging, genuine, funny, and kind subject to capture; as well as the fact that this video was so last minute and he willingly adjusted his schedule to accommodate my own <3 Music by Homage Beats by @patata810
