June is PTSD Awareness Month, and I’d like to share some information with you.

PTSD affects around 12 million people in the United States. That’s a staggering number, and ITS NOT JUST VETERANS who are affected.

PTSD can strike anyone who has experienced a traumatic event. Trauma isn’t defined by a text book, nor do you get to decide which experience will affect you long term. Something traumatic to me, may not be to you in the same situation and vice versa. We don’t choose it, and we should never judge the response anyone has had to anything at all. Trauma wears many masks, and this isn’t something I’ve always been comfortable acknowledging or talking about.

But, studies show that 7 out of every 100 Veterans (or 7%) will have PTSD at some point in their life. In the general population, 6 out of every 100 adults (or 6%) will have PTSD in their lifetime. It’s a battle that many of us face, but we’re not alone. PLEASE don’t let your demons lie to you- reach out to a friend, a brother, a sister.

If you are struggling, reach out to US.

I’ll never turn my back on you, because I’ve been there personally and feeling alone was my own self doing. I wasn’t, and you’re not either.

This month, let’s come together to raise awareness about PTSD and the treatments available. Whether you are a veteran, first responder, or a civilian who has survived your trauma- there is help out there, and you are worth it.

Keep fighting, because we need you here with us, now more than ever.

He used to be just another trash panda knocking over cans at 0200 looking for leftover pizza.

Then he got the call.

Eighty one year old Ben Franklin walks out of Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention wraps. A sharp Philly woman named Elizabeth Willing Powel stops him cold.

“Well Doctor … what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?”

Franklin doesn’t blink.

“A republic … if you can keep it.”

That’s it. No speech. No spin. Just the hardest six words in American history.

He had just spent months watching imperfect men argue over an imperfect document and still signed it because he knew no better one was coming. Then he handed the whole experiment back to the people and told them the quiet part out loud. You don’t get to keep a republic by accident. You keep it by staying awake. You keep it by refusing the easy slide into kings, bureaucrats, and “trust us” government.

239 years later that warning still slaps.
