Auguste Rodin’s The Gates of Hell 🗿 • The monumental work was inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. • It took Rodin decades to develop, from 1880 until his death in 1917. • The bronze gates are about 6.8 metres high. • The Zurich version is one of eight bronze casts of the original work. • It is the 4th cast, made in 1942–47. • At the very top are the Three Shades, pointing down towards the entrance to Hell. • Just below them sits The Thinker, originally conceived as Dante — the poet contemplating the scenes of Hell below. • Many of Rodin’s best-known sculptures, including The Thinker, evolved from figures created for The Gates of Hell. There is something almost otherworldly about standing before The Gates of Hell in Zürich. 🖤 Created by Auguste Rodin, this monumental sculpture is a world of twisted bodies, naked figures, suffering and desire. Dozens of human forms seem to emerge from the darkness — some reaching, some falling, some caught in moments of despair. Above them, a mysterious winged figure appears almost like an angel from the underworld, watching over this haunting scene. Everywhere you look, there is movement: bodies intertwined, faces filled with emotion, figures seemingly pulled between heaven and hell. It feels less like a sculpture and more like a doorway into another world. And perhaps the most magical part? You don’t need a ticket or a museum entrance to encounter it. Standing in front of the old Kunsthaus Zürich, The Gates of Hell are part of the city’s public space — free for anyone to discover. THE WOUNDED ANGEL Cast in bronze. Marked by time. Broken by something unseen. Under the cold brilliance of light, the sculpture reveals what darkness conceals: fractured bronze, a shattered hand, the raw cement core exposed beneath the patina. An angel, not in his perfection — but in his ruin. The cracks become wounds. The wounds become history. And the light, almost mercilessly, becomes the witness. ✨ Some places reveal themselves slowly… ✨ I arrived by bike, following the beautiful Danube before climbing higher and higher towards the Liberation Hall in Kelheim. 🚲 And what a climb it was. Perched high above the Danube, the hall seems to emerge from the landscape — surrounded by forests, overlooking the river and the countryside far below. I arrived in the morning, and the light inside was simply magical. It streamed through the openings and fell softly across the magnificent interior, creating an almost mysterious atmosphere. And then there were the angels. 🤍 An entire circle of them, hand in hand, surrounding the hall beneath the enormous dome. Seeing them all together is quite breathtaking — and somehow, managing to capture the whole circle in one photograph makes you realise just how extraordinary this place is. The details are everywhere: the intricate floor, the monumental columns, the decorations, the vast dome. The longer you look, the more you see. And then comes another wonderful surprise: you can climb all the way up. From the gallery high above the interior, you can look down into the entire hall and finally grasp its immense scale. But the real reward waits outside. The Danube unfolds beneath you, winding through the landscape, with endless forests stretching into the distance. 🌿💙 After cycling along the river and then climbing all the way up here, seeing the Danube from this height felt especially magical. Perhaps that is what I loved most about this visit — not just the history, but the feeling of being surrounded by art, light, silence and the beautiful Danube landscape. THE GUARDIAN OF THE LITTLE ONES At the historic cemetery of Neu-Ulm, Germany, I came across this beautiful, youthful angel. He stands above a shared resting place for children — a silent guardian watching over lives that were far too short. There is something deeply touching in his expression. Not only sorrow, but tenderness. As if he has been entrusted with an eternal task: He does not speak. He does not sleep. He simply watches over them. The cemetery itself dates back to 1861 and holds numerous historic graves and monuments from the 19th and 20th centuries. A Jewish burial section, established in 1875, is also part of this historic place of remembrance. Among all these old stones, names and stories, this young guardian quietly caught my eye. Perhaps this is what makes him so moving — he seems to stand between earth and heaven, keeping watch over the little ones entrusted to his care. A silent guardian. A tender presence. Watching. Remembering. Protecting. Apparently this is a Catholic church. I repeat: Catholic. Church. 😂 St. Antonius, Münchwilen, Switzerland, designed by Karl Higi — one of Switzerland’s major modern church architects, responsible for 13 Catholic churches. Built in 1968. Brutalist concrete. One of those quiet places in Regensburg that feels like a little secret. ✨ The Upper Catholic Cemetery, dating back to the early 20th century, is filled with beautiful old graves, weathered stone and the kind of details that make you stop and look twice. 🕯️ This statue of the Virgin Mary caught my eye in particular. Her simple, veiled figure is crowned by a striking brass halo — a beautiful detail that gives the old statue an almost golden glow. 🤍 And then there is something else I found fascinating: directly across the street is Regensburg’s Evangelical Central Cemetery, opened in 1898. Just one street separates the two historic cemeteries, Catholic and Protestant, quietly facing each other. 🌿 Two cemeteries, two traditions, separated by a single street — both filled with traces of the people and stories that came before us.
