There is something special about how material can exemplify the directional presence of the human hand through the creation of a work of art. Through textured works, we’re able to see and visualize the artistic process I went through to create this piece. Blue surface variations through a reduction cooled area in the wood kiln will forever be my obsession. 😍

This is one of my favorite electric glazes I have ever used. It is so clean and incredibly consistent. Blue is certainly my favorite color! What’s yours?

Wood-fired and reduction cooled textured vase!

It took me a long time until I started liking this piece but now I love it! It is always so interesting to me how expectations in wood-fire can really affect how you look at your results. A lot of the time expectations can hinder your ability to get excited about work just because it wasn’t what you initially wanted. This is why I have stopped having expectations and now I tend to love everything that comes out as a result. Do you have expectations in life? If so, what for? Let me know!

Trimming and texturing a 12” vase and a little surprise visit from River. When I make vases, I typically trim right side up. I find this to be especially helpful when you’re working with pieces that are taller than they are wide. I will either refrain from wire cutting the piece from the bat or I will cut it and then just sponge the bat and squish the vase back onto the bat so it’s fairly snug. I’ll then utilize a plastic cap or lid to allow my hand to slide naturally while providing some extra pressure with my left hand so the piece remains centered through the trimming process. Let me know what you think!! How do you trim your vases? Would love to know!

Wood-fire Vase entitled: Aftermath: next to the heavily reduced blue results, my next favorite spot in the wood kiln is buried in any ashy coal bed. The results achieved are always a shock as they differ in every single firing. The more gnarly, juicy and drippy, the better, in my opinion. Let me know what you think! Do you agree?

Stoneware vase (in progress) for my boy @tavi_not_tavy
This piece was a little finicky at the start. Sometimes through lifting those wall, the hand slips or you can’t get a good grip on the clay. This tends to happen sometimes, but just need to push through and take it slow. Was definitely a little more challenging than I expected but we came out on top! Very excited to get this one carved up, glazed up and fired up. Let me know what you think

Throwback to Montana firings with heavy reduction cooling, transforming this piece from bisqued white/beige to blue beauty! This guy sat in a little corner behind large pieces which created an extremely reduced and smoky atmosphere. This effect is called Yohen which means “kiln strange” or “kiln change”. Definitely my absolute favorite effect. Love those blue colors!!
What do you think?

Spiral wave sculpture from start to finish: I loved making this!! My process as a sculptor is reductive. I start with a solid block of clay, form it into the shape I want and then it is dried slowly until close to leather hard so I can start carving out my texture. Then I need to use heat to form up that texture so as I hollow it out, the hard edges of the form do not lose their dramatic angles. Then it is dried slowly with plastic wrapped fairly tight around the top as thinner spots will dry a whole lot faster. This is so key so that the piece dries evenly and shrinks without cracking.
