France is learning the same lesson Western countries keep refusing to learn: You cannot import instability, tolerate disorder, hollow out institutions, and then act shocked when the streets become ungovernable. And this is where governments lose people. Citizens are told to be patient. Be tolerant. Pay more taxes. Accept worse services. Ignore rising disorder. Pretend obvious social fractures aren’t real. Then the second frustration boils over, politicians discover the word “crisis.” No. A functioning country does three things: It controls its borders. It integrates the people it admits. It punishes people who burn, attack and destroy. Compassion without standards becomes weakness. Diversity without integration becomes fragmentation. And a state that cannot maintain order eventually loses legitimacy. France’s problem is bigger than one night of riots. The viral version of this story is wrong, but the real number is still insane. The federal government did not discover $2.7 trillion in Medicare and Medicaid checks sent overseas. What the GAO actually found is that since 2003, federal agencies have reported roughly $2.7 TRILLION in improper payments across numerous government programs. That includes Medicare and Medicaid, but also other programs. “Improper” can mean fraud, the wrong amount, payments to ineligible recipients, or simply payments that lacked enough documentation to prove they were correct. Read that again. $2.7 trillion. Not every dollar was stolen. Not every dollar was fraud. But when your government has accumulated trillions of dollars in payments it admits were made incorrectly or cannot properly substantiate, we have a problem. And here’s what drives normal people insane: You screw up your taxes by $800 and the government knows your address. Miss a student loan payment? They know. Forget to renew a $42 registration? Somehow civilization finds you. But federal agencies can accumulate $2.7 trillion in improper payments over two decades and everyone just kind of shrugs. This isn’t a Republican problem. It isn’t a Democrat problem. It’s a gigantic-institution-with-somebody-else’s-money problem. We argue endlessly about raising taxes, cutting programs, and adding another trillion dollars to the national debt. Maybe before demanding another dollar from working Americans, Washington should become considerably better at tracking the dollars it already takes from them. You cannot call taxpayers selfish for wanting accountability when the government itself admits the accounting is broken. Halo changing hands isn’t a minor studio shuffle. It’s Microsoft admitting something had to change. Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries, is being reduced while Activision builds the next Halo. And honestly? Good. Old Halo was magic. Halo 2 and Halo 3 were events. LAN parties. Midnight launches. Forge. Custom games. Ranked matches. Trash talk through a headset that sounded like it was transmitting from the moon. Then Microsoft somehow took one of gaming’s easiest layups and spent years dribbling the ball off its own foot. The problem wasn’t just politics. Halo had leadership churn, technical problems, content droughts, live-service mistakes, and years of chasing trends. But the result was the same: Halo stopped feeling like Halo. Fans didn’t want Halo to become Call of Duty. They didn’t want Halo to become Fortnite. They wanted Halo. Master Chief being a stoic badass. Military camaraderie. Mysterious sci-fi worlds. Incredible music. Shotguns. Energy swords. Sticky grenades. Your idiot friend flipping the Warthog for the 14th time. And yes, Activision taking over is objectively hilarious. It’s like asking the Packers to rebuild the Bears. But maybe that’s exactly the humiliation Halo needed. The blueprint isn’t complicated: Respect the old games. Respect the fans. Stop chasing every trend. Ship a complete game. Make multiplayer fun on day one. And remember what made Halo great in the first place. You don’t revitalize a beloved franchise by reinventing what people loved about it.
