🎹 WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON? | I'm Still Standing! 🎶

A little Elton John to brighten your day! 🎵

This week, one of our brilliant Pathways students is working on the iconic I'm Still Standing — and we reckon it's a pretty good choice!

Great music, a little determination and plenty of personality. That's what we love to see in our lessons! 💜

Real Lessons. Real Connection. Real Progress.

Over the past couple of weeks, we've talked about two things :

1. The value of doing something difficult. About putting down the screens, embracing a challenge and discovering the satisfaction of earning something.
and
2 We've talked about the courage it takes to walk onto a stage.

But there's one final thought I'd like to leave you with.

"A gift that stays."

Christmas is coming. And with it, the inevitable question of what to buy our children, friends and family.

There'll be toys. Games. Gadgets. Things that bring enormous excitement on Christmas morning and, quite possibly, are forgotten by Easter.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

But I want to make the case for something different.

Think about what happens when a child learns an instrument.

At first, it's difficult. The notes don't make sense. The fingers won't cooperate. Progress feels painfully slow.

But little by little, something extraordinary happens.

They begin to make music.

And here's the wonderful thing.

The ability to sit at a piano and play something beautiful doesn't disappear when the batteries run out. It doesn't become obsolete when the next model arrives.

It's theirs.

At 10. At 20. At 50. At 80.

Perhaps one day they'll play for their own children. Perhaps they'll find comfort in music during a difficult chapter. I know I have. Perhaps they'll simply sit down after a long day and play something they love.

We can't know what role music will play in their future.

But we can give them the opportunity to discover it.

And that's why I've always believed we should talk about music education as an investment, rather than simply a price.

We're not just paying for thirty minutes of someone's time each week.

We're investing in knowledge. Confidence. Creativity. A relationship with music that could last a lifetime.

Not every student will become a professional musician.

Nor should they have to.

But some of the greatest returns on an investment have absolutely nothing to do with money.

So as Christmas approaches, perhaps it's worth thinking not just about what we can give our family this year...

...But what we can give them for life. by @pathwaysmusicschool

🎹 WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON? | Sacha 🎶

Some pieces are best played slowly.

This isn't one of them! 😂

This week, Sacha is showing us what he's been working on — a fast-paced classical piece that certainly keeps those fingers busy!

Speed, precision and plenty of practice. Brilliant work, Sacha! 💜

Real Lessons. Real Connection. Real Progress.

🎹 WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON? | Zoey 🎶

This week, Zoey is showing us what she's been learning — a piece called Midnight Ride!

Well... once we managed to get the introduction right. Four attempts later! 😂

A little laughter, a little music and plenty of personality. Just another day at Pathways! 💜

🎶 WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON? | Jasleen 🎶

Exam preparation is in full swing at Pathways!

Here's Jasleen working hard on one of her Grade 4 Clarinet exam pieces! 🎵

Behind every great performance are hours of practice, patience and perseverance. And it's wonderful to see all that hard work coming together!

Keep up the brilliant work, Jasleen! 💜

A few days ago, I talked about the importance of doing something real. Something difficult. Something that asks a little more of us than simply swiping a screen.

And as we continue preparing for our Christmas Concerts, I think there's a wonderful extension of that idea.

Learning music is one thing. SHARING it is quite another!

There's something rather extraordinary about watching a student walk onto a stage.

The nerves. The anticipation. That last little glance towards their teacher or parents before they begin.

And then, the music.

I think performing is one of the most valuable experiences we can offer our students at Pathways.

Not because we expect every child to become a professional musician, but because standing in front of an audience and sharing something you've worked hard to achieve takes real courage.

It teaches us to prepare. To concentrate. To manage our nerves. To make mistakes and carry on regardless.

And perhaps most importantly, it teaches us that being brave doesn't mean not being frightened.

It means doing something anyway.

Some students will walk onto that stage full of confidence. Others will need every ounce of courage they can muster.

Both deserve the same applause.

Because the real achievement isn't necessarily playing every note perfectly.

It's having a go.

And when the music finishes, something has changed. They've done something difficult, something real, and something they'll remember long after the final note.

THAT is why we do concerts.

Not simply to showcase what our students have learned, but to celebrate who they're becoming.

Speaking of which, signups for our End of Year concert are up NOW in the parent foyer! Get in quick!

REAL MUSIC. REAL CONNECTIONS. REAL LIFE.

I think we've forgotten something.

In a world where almost everything is instant, accessible and available at the swipe of a finger, there's something extraordinary about sitting down at a piano and realising you can't simply swipe your way to being good at it.

You have to work at it.

You have to get it wrong. Again and again. You have to listen, concentrate, persevere and occasionally wonder why on earth you started.

And then, one day, something clicks.

Your hands do something they couldn't do yesterday. Something that once seemed impossible suddenly makes sense.

And nobody gave you that achievement. You earned it.

I think we need more of that.

More things that are difficult. More things that demand our attention rather than compete for it. More opportunities to put the phone down, switch off the noise and actually do something.

Because music isn't passive. It asks something of us.

It engages our hands, our ears, our minds and our emotions. It connects us to people in the room, but also, remarkably, to people who lived hundreds of years before us.

Think about that.

A child sitting at a piano in Flagstaff Hill today can play something Beethoven wrote more than two centuries ago. The same notes. The same musical ideas. A conversation across generations, without a screen or algorithm in sight.

And then there's the human connection.

A teacher sitting beside a student. The laughter when something goes wrong. The encouragement when something finally goes right. The nerves before a performance. The applause afterwards.

These are real experiences. The sort that stay with us.

At Pathways, I don't believe our job is simply to teach children how to play an instrument.

It's to give them something they can carry through life. Something to turn to when they're happy, struggling, bored, or simply want to feel a little more alive.

Because that's what music does.

It wakes us up.

So perhaps, in a world determined to make everything easier, faster and more digital, there's a case for doing something rather old-fashioned.

Put the screen down. Pick up an instrument. Make something real. by @pathwaysmusicschool
