Moderately & With Great Boredom @patientinfo is less than two weeks away!

Moderately & With Great Boredom (Sports Et Divertissements) is a reimagining and contemporary interpretation of Erik Satie and Charles Martin’s 1914 livre d’artiste. “Sports Et Divertissements” includes 20 short piano compositions, an introductory chorale and short prose written by Satie, accompanied by 20 illustrations created by Martin - all depicting various sports and leisure activities - eg: Golf, Sea Bathing, Picnic, Flirting, etc. It is not known if Satie had access to Martin’s images as a reference point for which to create his musical compositions, and even if he did, it was unlikely that he kept them in mind. As is common with Satie’s works, he is often making fun of more highbrow or academic music. Even in the preface of “Sports” he states, “For the dried up and stultified I have written a Chorale which is serious and respectable.” And if we look further throughout the scores, we can locate his signature, humorous instructions to the musician, such as “Moderately & with great boredom.”

It is with all of this in mind, approaching with a sense of playfulness, humor and whimsy, that I have brought together 63 artists, musicians and performers to execute the reimagining.

Opening: Friday, September 25th, 6pm-10pm

Performances by:

Jack Larmer, Jesse Malmed, Jan Brugger, Madison Mae Parker, Corey Smith

Closing: Sunday, October 25th (hours TBD)

Performances by:

Don’t miss out!!! Get your tickets NOW to Cosmic Rodeo, Arts of Life’s 2026 Benefit Auction! A link to purchase tickets can be found in bio.

Saturday, September 19 6-11pm

221 N Paulina St, Chicago

Arts of Life is an organization that is at the center of the Chicago arts community, simultaneously pulsing energy within its studio walls and exhibitions space while radiating creativity out across the city when activating galleries and institutions. Its mission is to inspire artistic expression, build community, and develop independence for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Arts of Life serves 80 artists through three studio locations in Chicago’s West Town and South Side neighborhoods and in Glenview, IL.

Patient Info has been fortunate enough to work with Arts of Life and exhibit work by a few of their talented artists. In the beginning of 2025 Noel Herrera’s solo exhibition “Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!” graced our walls with his amusing marker drawings which are a direct extension of his everyday life and interests – playful tributes to favorite foods, restaurants, tv shows, toys, etc. His process is defined by fast-paced, intuitive precision.

Later in 2025, Susan Pasowicz had three works in the group show “Drawing On” curated by Jessica Zawadowicz and Michael Cuadrado alongside work by Josiah Ellner, Jonathan Worcester, Ingrid Olson, Barbara Jenkins and Jairo Serna. Susan is a legend who doesn’t require an introduction but for the unacquainted, she is a dreamer and visionary. Fascinated by organic forms, mystery, and the supernatural, Pasowicz creates atmospheric spaces and whimsical landscapes in graphite and colored pencil. Informed by both the ordinary and the magical, hints of her memories and the everyday become tangled in webs of amorphous shapes and wispy, hair-like marks. Sometimes using both hands or multiple drawing implements simultaneously, her delicate mark-making gradually accumulates and becomes layered on the paper’s surface.

I’m honored to be included in the Readers @chicago_reader latest profile on independent curators in Chicago alongside so many other talented and hardworking folks.

Huge thank you to Annette LePique @im_piqued for the generous and thoughtful writing, Kerry Cardozo @booksnotboyz Kirk Williamson the photos and everyone else at the Reader for all the important work they do highlighting the Chicago Arts community.

As I mention in the write up, I don’t consider myself a curator in the traditional sense which might sound strange because of all the curation happening at Patient Info.

It’s a privilege and joy to collaborate with other artists and to exhibit their work. Patient Info wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the weird, the restless and the kind people that make up the Chicago arts community.

Congratulations again to the other curators whose were included:

Thank you to everyone who attended the closing reception for Speaking Backwards and a huge thank you to Jeanne Skaggs and Stephanie Schlegel for sharing their late father’s Steve Schlegel’s collection with the public.

Researching the 60 plus works in Steve’s collection was a humbling experience for many reasons. The 20 plus paintings, works on paper, sculptures, ceramics and photographs that comprised the exhibition were a testament to Steve’s 40 year support of the Chicago arts community and to his commitment to live an intellectually curious life. Each artwork varied in every sense but shared the common theme of directness. If I learned anything from Steve it was to say what you mean but with a smile when necessary. I believe he collected from his gut, influenced by positive interactions with artists and friends, his interest in formal elements like color and pattern, his deep interest in history, and most importantly his belief in justice.

As a painter, it was humbling again to look back and see who was making what over the decades here in Chicago. Endless inspiration. Rest in peace El Presidente.

Speaking Backwards included artwork by: Antonia Gurkovska, Celeste Rapone, Chris Cosnowski, Gary Weisman, John David Mooney, John Himmelfarb, Kyle Surges, Kyung Hwa, Margo Humphrey, Marilyn Propp, Melvin King, Phyllis Bramson, Richard Howard Hunt, Robert Amft, Tom Hubert and Vera Klement
