Rest in power, #dollyparton. You were an inspiration and a hero to #appalachia. I took a trip to Pigeon Forge back in 2017 and made these. @dollyparton will be missed. taken in Dollywood by @patjarrett

Photos from my “diary camera,” as Sam Abell puts it. These are photos from my travels this spring and summer with friends, loves and family.

This is the last weekend @goldenponyva will be active, and my heart hurts for all involved. This was a place where everyone knew everyone, where you belong, where we gathered to make music and forge deep connections that kept us all going. There are too many highlights to list, but I got a few shots here. I can’t thank the staff enough for giving us weirdos a place to go. I’ve known @paulsomers for almost two decades and I can’t imagine what he’s been through, from taking over the Nile to navigating Covid and the local authorities—it was a lot. Highlights for me included seeing @yourbaroness on this stage back in ‘21, so many @valkyrie_va shows, opening for @heavytemple at @macrockva with @heemeyer_doom, Annie’s memorial show with @crab_action, @r0blayne and @rosiepantsmmmk’s wedding, the list is too long. My heart hurts that I can’t be there this weekend, go and get sweaty for me.

I got a package in the mail today from my dad’s best friend, Jim. Jim lost his leg (his shifting leg) in a helicopter attack in Vietnam, but it never stopped him from riding. Last time we rode he rode down the parkway with dad, me and a bunch of good dudes. He sent me a shop manual for a bike he helped me get, and in it was a note. In part the note read “I envy your youth, my riding days are ending. Enjoy some twisties for me!” I took his suggestion and rode up to the top of Shenandoah Mountain this evening on dad’s bike, just in time for a spectacular sunset. I’m definitely my father’s son, and Jim has been solidly there for me. If you’re still reading, hug your dad, and check in on those elders who made a difference in your life.

"Activism is an art form."

Still completely blown away by last Friday's talk by Pat Jarrett and Maggie Worthington. Who knew this sludge metal band was one of Staunton's loudest, bravest and most dedicated voices for justice?

And not from screaming into a mic (though we learned how cathartic that is) - but from community organizing, speaking up against injustice and raising funds in support of some of our most vulnerable populations.

This was a master class in community activation (DIY) and we couldn't feel prouder of these activists in our idyllic small town - raging against the machine.

@patjarrett & @cicada.girl - we are so proud to have you✊

Thank you for what you do!
