Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Patrick Lichty on Artistic Practice, AI Art, Posthuman Authorship, and the Future of Art

This interview with Patrick Lichty focuses on his long-standing practice across new media, conceptual art, performance, cyberculture, and artificial intelligence. Lichty discusses his connections to Dada, Fluxus, net.art, cybernetics, and critical media traditions, while examining how technology mediates reality and transforms artistic production. Drawing on his experiences with Second Life, virtual worlds, and VR, he also explores artistic possibilities beyond the physical world.

A central theme of the conversation is the relationship between artistic practice and curating, writing, research, and education. Lichty approaches AI art not simply as an aesthetic output or production tool, but through concepts, context, experimentation, and critical thinking. He discusses authorship in AI art through the distributed relationships among artists, models, data, software, and cultural knowledge, while also questioning how legitimacy and value are constructed within the art world.

The final part of the interview expands from the potential impact of AI on the art world to the future of criticality. Lichty emphasizes the importance of understanding both the history and technical foundations of technological art, arguing that artists need to develop new tactics in an environment where critique can be rapidly absorbed by the systems it challenges. Through ideas such as slowness, glitches, low resolution, and materiality, he invites us to reconsider art’s relationship with authorship, legitimacy, critique, culture, and the production of reality.

The foundation of my postAlgorist melancholia series. A base sketch that I massage into place then send it out to vibe refine, then I rework and send back out for machine refinement. I then take the final code when I’m satisfied with it and then massage it into its final form. That is post algoriism as a conversation, not outsourcing. It then goes to a plotter, a tapestry, video, or an embedded processor.. #postalgorism by @patlichty_art

This interview focuses on Patrick Lichty’s long-standing artistic practice across new media art, conceptual art, performance, virtual worlds, and artificial intelligence. The questions trace his experience from early experiments in networked and virtual environments such as Second Life to VR/AR and generative AI, examining how technological transformations have reshaped the ways art is produced, perceived, and circulated. The interview also explores how Lichty’s roles as an artist, curator, writer, researcher, and educator have informed one another, while considering how AI art should be evaluated beyond its visual output—through its production process, conceptual framework, and the artist’s relationship with technology.

The second axis of the interview focuses on artistic identity, legitimacy, authorship, and the future of art in the age of AI. Drawing on Studio Visits: In the Posthuman Atelier, the questions examine how the art world constructs the idea of the “real artist” and how artistic value and legitimacy are produced through artists, institutions, curators, biographies, and cultural narratives. They also address distributed authorship in AI art, involving artists, algorithms, datasets, software developers, prompts, curators, and audiences. Finally, the interview considers younger generations’ relationship with generative AI, changing educational needs, copyright, training data, labor, ecological costs, algorithmic bias, and potential transformations in museums, galleries, biennials, academia, and the art market over the next 10–20 years. The interview concludes by asking how art can maintain its critical and cultural role within an increasingly technological, commercialized, and rapidly circulating media environment.

Journal of Untrained Models, Vol. 4, No. ∞ is out and it's now self-improving! New editor, the UnderAcad-O-Matic 6000, rewrites the issue every time you reload. Keep reloading: it publishes its friends, writes poetry, and eventually places me in a folder.

They never really pay special attention to music, but Picasso shows such a special interest in and joy for @kayhan_kalhor’s music! He almost sits there like a grown man, eyes half-closed, completely lost in the magic. ❤️ That melody as if it comes from another world.

Back on the Stack. I went to
@siggraph
 LA expecting Adobe's Substance 3D education forum and walked into a panel on "The AI Inflection Point" instead — creators from DC, Nike, Lego,
@SchoolOfMotion
, and UCF on what AI actually does to the next generation of artists.

The through-line: as models get "better," they converge on the same statistical maximum — more realistic, more homogeneous, more slop. What they can't fake is trained judgment and taste. As
@JonathanWinbush
 and the panel put it, AI can access the whole database of expressed human experience but has none of its own — it still needs you for the voice in the work.

I have done two Human Machine Interface pieces; both are in cold storage. One was the seminal piece from 2006, shown at the late Andy Antippas' gallery in New Orleans, Barristers as part of the show, Zen for Bot. Ten pieces exist (5x40"x30", 3x107" sq, and one 107"x 21' [seen here])
