Somehow graduated from grad school last week, which is especially impressive considering my core academic strategy was “vaguely panic, read 70% of the material, and compensate with enthusiasm.”
The diploma is real, though. I checked.
The strangest part is realizing this is the first summer in four years where I’m not balancing classes, papers, work, side hustles, existential dread, and a group chat full of people saying “gentle reminder on the deliverable.”
No discussion posts. No Blackboard notifications. No pretending that I prefer AP Style, have a hot take on AI, or disinformation. Just freedom. Or at least the kind of freedom where you still wake up in a cold sweat because your brain thinks there’s an assignment due at midnight.

More than the academic rigmarole, I am grateful for the people I have met and the experiences I have had. They, along with my parents, coworkers, and convince store owners , are the real heros of this story. And honestly deserve tenure or at the very least adjunct faculty status.

Anyway. Looking forward to spending the summer reading books I actually choose myself, drinking beers outdoors like a recently paroled man, rediscovering hobbies that aren’t “opening 37 tabs,” and generally channeling my inner washed-up degenerate writer.

A little Hunter S. Thompson paranoia, a little Anthony Bourdain romanticism, a little “answering emails from a pool chair at 2:17 p.m.” The American dream as interpreted by a man who technically owns sunscreen but can never find it.

So if you need me this summer, I’ll either be by the pool with a paperback and an irresponsible lunch beer(s), or at the skatepark trying to reconnect with whatever remained of my frontal lobe before grad school. by @patrick.j.mc

Four years and I am still making the same face. I guess now is a good time as any to say that when I graduate from school, I will be making my return to the stage, and have a few things on the back burner that may be interesting, so keep on the lookout. A lot of self-righteous anger needs an outlet.

I used to hate this time of year when I was younger. The days got shorter it bummed me out but as I get older I am starting to appreciate the beauty of winter. Find the bright side of the darkness. Who knows what lies underneath. by @patrick.j.mc
